Warner Home Video Releases Next Wave of DVD Titles
Tribute to Stanley Kubrick Leads June Schedule, Including Boxed Set of All-Time Classics
(May 27,1999) Warner Home Video today announced its June DVD schedule,
featuring the first-ever DVD release of many of the major films of Stanley
Kubrick, plus other titles ranging from comedy to drama and suspense.
The six special edition Kubrick titles can be purchased as a boxed set for $149.92 or individually for $24.98 each. The set features these acclaimed movies:
2001: A Space Odyssey (available June 29, catalogue #906309, $24.98) Kubrick takes viewers on an allegorical journey from the age of the apes to the infinite and beyond in this special effects pioneer whose visual majesty continues to inspire. One of two Kubrick classics named by the American Film Institute to the Top 100 film list, the movie won the Academy Award for best visual effects. DVD extras include a rare interview with 2001 co-author Arthur C. Clarke and the theatrical trailers for this movie and its sequel, 2010: The Year We Made Contact.
A Clockwork Orange (available June 29, catalogue #17367, $24.98) Malcolm McDowell (Tank Girl, Milk Money) plays the "droog" youth committed to ultraviolence, who becomes a test case for behavior modification with unforeseen consequences. Based on the path-breaking Anthony Burgess novel, this cult classic redefined graphic realism, won the Best Picture and Best Director awards from the New York Film Critics, and is the second Kubrick film selected for the AFI's Top 100 list.
Full Metal Jacket (available June 29, catalogue # 173 71, $24.98) The madness of the Vietnam War is captured masterfully in this unrelenting tale of naive youths transformed into unquestioning killers. Matthew Modine (Gross Anatomy, Married to the Mob) leads an ensemble cast of soldiers, who survive a brutal boot camp instructor, but are nevertheless unprepared to engage a surprise enemy in the field.
Lolita (available June 29, catalogue 9206851, $24.98) Nabokov's masterpiece is brilliantly adapted in this tale of a middle-aged man obsessed with his wife's pre-teen daughter. James Mason (North by Northwest, The Boys from Brazil) headlines as the famous pedophile, Humbert Humbert, and Sue Lyon defines temptation as the nymphet with a sweet tooth. Memorable supporting performances by Shelley Winters (Heavy, A Patch of Blue) and Peter Sellers (Dr. Strangelove, The Pink Panther) layer extra dimensions of dark humor in a film that dared to exist before its time.
The Shining (available June 29, catalogue #17369, $24.98) In this horror favorite, the Overlook Hotel is Jack Nicholson's (As Good as it Gets, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) intended cure for writer's block, but instead triggers a descent into murderous lunacy. Nobody does madness like Nicholson, and Shelley Duvall (Home Fries, Roxanne) excels as the petrified wife. This DVD features an exclusive bonus: a behind-the-scenes documentary by Vivian Kubrick, the director's daughter, entitled The Making of the Shining.
Barry Lyndon (available June 29, catalogue # 173 66, $24.98) This film, winner of four Academy Awards, stars Ryan O'Neal (Zero Effect, Love Story) as an Irish lad whose mastery of deceit and cynicism inspires a rise from poverty to nobility in 18-century Britain. Kubrick's hypnotic photography and score combine to create a period piece of unsurpassed beauty.
In addition to the Kubrick releases, the following titles will also be available for purchase in June:
Murder in the First (available June 22, catalogue #13895, $19.98) Kevin Bacon (Wild Things, Sleepers) and Christian Slater (Broken Arrow, Pump Up the Volume) star in this gripping true drama of a young man sentenced to three years in Alcatraz solitary confinement for a petty theft committed during the Depression. Bacon plays an Alcatraz prisoner who murdered a fellow inmate and Slater plays the novice lawyer who refuses to accept the case as a lost cause. A terrifying Gary Oldman (Dracula, JFK) costars.
Billy Jack (available June 22, catalogue #1040, $14.98) Set in the turbulent '60s, this film captures the birth of Great Society ideologies that would soon divide the country. Tom Laughlin (The Big Sleep, No Escape) stars as a half-breed who rejects his white heritage and appoints himself the protector of freedom for school youngsters located on a threatened Indian reservation.
Cannonball Run II (available June 22, catalogue # 113 77, $14.98) Burt Reynolds (Boogie Nights, Striptease) and Dom DeLuise (Baby Geniuses, Johnny Dangerously) reprise their star turns in a wacky tale of people willing to risk everything to win the gold in a cross-country race. Innumerable stars deliver surprise cameo appearances throughout the wild adventure, including a Rat Pack reunion with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Shirley MacLaine.
Just Cause (available June 22, catalogue #13623, $14.98) Sean Connery (The Avengers, Playing by Heart) stars as a Harvard Law professor attempting to prove the innocence of a Florida Death Row inmate played by Blair Underwood (Deep Impact, Gattaca). Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix, Othello), Kate Capshaw (Love Affair, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) and Ed Harris (The Truman Show, Apollo 13) complete a star-studded cast in this thriller that turns up the heat just when you think its over.
The Power of One (available June 22, catalogue #12411, $14.98) John G. Alvidsen, Oscar-winning director of Rocky and The Karate Kid, weaves a magical recounting of the inspirational tale of P.K., played by Stephen Dorff (Blade, I Shot Andy Warhol), a boy who uses his head, heart and fists to battle apartheid in 1940s South Africa. Morgan Freeman (The Shawshank Redemption, Kiss the Girls) and the legendary Sir John Gielgud (Elizabeth, Arthur) co-star in this sweeping epic.
Sour Grapes (available June 22, catalogue #C2532, $14.98) Seinfeld fans rejoice! Steve Weber (At First Sight, Leaving Las Vegas) and Craig Bierko (The Thirteenth Floor, 'Til There Was You) star in this hilarious romp from the co-creator of the world's favorite show about nothing. When two cousins journey to Atlantic City and one hits the jackpot with quarters bummed from the other, their relationship turns sour.
The Witches (available June 22, catalogue #671, $14.98) From Jim Henson, director Nicolas Roeg and Willy Wonka creator Roald Dahl comes this fantastic fable of a coven of witches plotting to transform all of England's children into mice. The stiletto-clad Angelica Huston (The Grifters, Prizzi's Honor) gives a towering performance as the villainous Grand High Witch, a performance that won her the Los Angeles and National Society of Film Critics Best Actress Awards.
Gremlins (available June 22, catalogue #11388, $19.98) Gizmo and his wayward brothers are better than ever on DVD! Joe Dante (Innerspace, Small Soldiers) directs and Steven Spielberg produces this wickedly entertaining tale of little demons that wreak havoc on a quiet town on Christmas Eve.
Also, revisit the magic of these classic titles, already on shelves:
An American in Paris (released April 27, catalogue #906273, $24.98) The wondrous music of George and Ira Gershwin and the perfection of dancing legend Gene Kelly (Inherit the Wind, Singing in the Rain) combine to inspire this 1952 Academy Award winner for Best Picture. Kelly plays an artist living in post-W.W.II Paris caught in a love triangle with two very different women - Leslie Caron (Gigi, Daddy Long Legs), an innocent perfume seller, and Nina Foch (Spartacus, The Ten Commandments), an American heiress wanting to cultivate Kelly's career.
Gigi (released April 27, catalogue #907482, $24.98) The masterminds behind My Fair Lady's music, Lerner and Lowe, again deliver irresistible melodies in this winner of nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Leslie Caron (An American in Paris, 'Til There Was You) stars as a free-spirited tomboy-turned-courtesan who romances Louis Jourdan's (Leviathan, Octopussy) wealthy playboy.
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (released April 27, catalogue #906567, $24.98) Jane Powell (Small Town Girl, Royal Wedding) and Howard Keel (Kiss Me Kate, Calamity Jane) star in the Dolby Digital remix of this spirited serving of Western culture and rambunctious music. Fascinating bonuses on this dual-layered DVD include an in-depth "making of' documentary that takes people behind the scenes of the musical magic.
They Were Expendable (released May 18) John Wayne (True Grit, The Searchers), Robert Montgomery (Night Must Fall, Petticoat Fever) and Donna Reed (The Last Time I Saw Paris, From Here to Eternity) star in this rousing W.W.II epic narrative that follows American squadron fighting in the Pacific after the devastation at Pearl Harbor.
Bataan (released May 18) The U.S. is on the defense in this powerful war drama staffing Robert Taylor (The Power and the Prize, Ivanhoe) about thirteen men chosen to blow up a bridge on the Bataan peninsula during the dark days of W.W.II.

A number of web sites including The Big Picture and dvdfile.com are reporting that Buena Vista Home Video will soon be joining the ranks of the studios supporting the 16:9 anamorphic enhancement on DVD. This news couldn’t possibly make us any happier, unless Buena Vista announced that they would also be re-mastering the titles that didn’t already have the enhancement. ARMAGEDDON and SCREAM (complete, uncut director’s cut) would be as good a place as any to start. Yeah, I know it is too much to hope for… Anyway, as soon as any actual titles are announced supporting the 16:9 enhancement, it will be reported on this page. FYI, Buena Vista Home Video encompasses titles on released on the Walt Disney, Touchstone, Hollywood, Miramax and Dimension labels.
The American Icon in Her Legendary TV Series: Two Shows Available for the First Time Ever-With Liza Minnelli and Mickey Rooney
Entertainment will release on June 15, two complete episodes of "THE JUDY
GARLAND SHOW" on DVD -- that have never been released on any format -- with
her guests Liza Minnelli and Mickey Rooney. These early segments from
Garland's 1963-64 CBS-TV series showcase the superstar with the two talents
that meant the most to her: former MGM musical co-star Rooney, and daughter
The program with Rooney was the very first episode taped for Garland's highly anticipated multi-million dollar series. Singing songs such as "How About You?," "Our Love Affair," "You're So Right For Me" -- and a sketch where they spoof their "Hey, Gang, Let's Put On A Show" musicals -- the pair proved they still had the old MGM chemistry. Judy's solos include "I Feel A Song Coming On," "When The Sun Comes Out," "Who Cares?," and the electrifying "Old Man River," which remains one of the definitive moments of Garland's 45-year career, and of television history.
Judy worked with Liza for the first time "officially" on this third episode of her series. Fresh from her triumphant off-Broadway debut in "Best Foot Forward," 17-year old Liza already displays the talent that would earn her an Oscar and 3 Tony Awards, during both her solo work here and in the duets with "Mama," which include "Together," "The Best Is Yet To Come," and their "Two Lost Souls" number, which revived Judy's famous 'tramp' character -- this time with Liza playing along. Garland again has solos that present her at the very peak of her powers, including the astonishing "Come Rain Or Come Shine," and the heartbreaking "As Long As He Needs Me."
Not widely seen since their original broadcast over 35 years ago, these two episodes are making their home video debut -- on DVD including informative liner notes and rare outtakes never aired, the programs have been digitally remastered and restored from the original 2-inch videotapes, and are presented in both the original mono and newly created 5.1 surround tracks. You will have the feeling you're in Studio 43 at CBS Television City in Hollywood for the legendary series known as "The Show That Got Away." These 26 episodes presented legends such as Tony Bennett, Lena Horne, Count Basie, Ethel Merman, Mel Torme, Peggy Lee, Bobby Darin, and Donald O'Connor among others. Look for a deluxe multi-disc DVD box set from Pioneer Entertainment this Fall of "The Judy Garland Show."
