VCI HOME VIDEO DOES ANAMORPHIC

According to DVD Review, there is some great news for Dario Argento fans. VCI Home Video has decided to create a brand new 16:9 anamorphic enhanced transfer for their upcoming release of Dario Argento's classic THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE. Not only will the DVD include the critical 16:9 enhancement; THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE will be the same uncut version of the film that The Roan Group recently released on Laserdisc.

Once again, another small company opts to support the 16:9 enhancement, while certain large supposedly prestigious home video companies continue to drag their feet over the issue…

THE SITE GETS A PARTIAL FACELIFT

Since Friday July 23, 1999, I’ve been doing a little general maintenance on the site. Older News Tidbits have moved to The Archives and some of the graphics have been redesigned to give the site a cleaner look. I will continue to fine tune things slowly, instead of completely overhauling the site in one big traumatic operation. No point in killing the patient, just to put a pretty face on things.

CRITERION STILL INVESTIGATING AN ANAMORPHIC SPARTACUS

I’ve heard from a few DVD collectors who have contacted Criterion about their upcoming release of SPARTACUS. It seems that Criterion is still investigating the possibility of producing a 16:9 enhanced presentation of SPARTACUS for DVD. So, if you want to see the absolute finest presentation of SPARTACUS that the DVD format can provide, please let your feelings be know to Criterion.

07/14/99

A CRITERION MISTAKE OF EPIC PROPORTIONS

While it is terrific that Criterion will be releasing a collector’s edition of the Kirk Douglas/Stanley Kubrick epic SPARTACUS on DVD with a ton of extras, the fact that the disc will not be enhanced for wide screen televisions almost defeats the purpose of a re-issue. Also, how many individuals that already own SPARTACUS are going to be willing to pay $49.95 just to get the extras? After all, without the 16:9 anamorphic enhancement, the new two-disc set would be just a collection of extras for anyone who already owns the original disc. If you want to see SPARTACUS done right, contact Criterion.

FOX DOES ANAMORPHIC IN REGION 2

Just got word from the webmaster over at DVD Inside (a German DVD site) that almost all of the upcoming of Region 2 Fox DVD titles will feature the anamorphic enhancement.  INDEPENDENCE DAY and THE FLY are amongst the titles being offered in 16:9.  Of course, TITANIC remains the only notable exception.  Let's hope that Fox gets with the program in Region 1.

FREDDY KRUEGER COMES IN AN ANAMORPHIC BOX

New Line's press release for their upcoming NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET box set wasn't specific about the DVD's being mastered with the 16:9 anamorphic enhancement.   While I didn't have any doubts, since New Line's first rate reputation guaranteed that the DVDs would be enhanced.  Reports of a confirmation from New Line have been creeping up all over the net.  So have no fear (except of Freddy), all seven NIGHTMARE films will include the anamorphic enhancement.  This is definitely shaping up to be a killer box set.

PIONEER PULLS THE PLUG ON LASERDISC

For years, I’ve been saying that the Laserdisc format has been on the critical list. When Laserdisc was only the smallest of niche formats, Pioneer Entertainment was the only thing that stood between it and oblivion in the United States. Of course, a little company named Image Entertainment also became involved with the format, and Laserdisc came back from the brink of extinction. Laserdisc even became the home theater format of choice for a few years. Well it looks as if the Laserdisc format is now only a heartbeat away from its total demise. Pioneer Entertainment has dropped Laserdisc from its product line, and will instead focus on DVD and VHS (these two formats already account for 90% of Pioneer Entertainment’s business). Read a full report HERE. Now that Pioneer has pulled the plug on Laserdisc, it looks as if Image Entertainment is the only thing standing between Laserdisc and the fate that befell Beta and CED.
