OUCH!!! $40 FOR THE UPCOMING ANIMATED DISNEY TITLES!!!

Several DVD web sites are reporting that Disney has raised the prices of their upcoming animated titles to an unprecedented $39.99 each. I know a lot of DVD collectors are feeling a sharp pain as they grab their wallets. Personally, I find the prices extreme for titles that aren't 16:9 enhanced and offer few or no extras. Recapping the titles: PINOCCHIO will appear on October 26, 1999. 101 DALMATIANS, HERCULES and MULAN are coming on November 11, 1999. LADY AND THE TRAMP, PETER PAN and SIMBA'S PRIDE (LION KING II) fly into stores on November 23, 1999. THE JUNGLE BOOK and THE LITTLE MERMAID will be available on December 7, 1999.

SYNOPSIS

Nick Chen (Chow Yun-Fat) is one of the NYPD's most decorated officers. The first Chinese-born immigrant on the force, Chen has used his close ties with a group of Chinese "businessman" known as the Triads to rise through the ranks. Now, a gold shield detective and the star officer on the city's highly touted Asian Gang Unit, it's Chen's job to keep the peace in Chinatown. But a turf war has erupted between the Triads and the newly arrived and brutally violent Fukienese Dragons. As the precarious peace in Chinatown is interrupted, the NYPD beefs up the Asian Gang Unit with a new recruit: an idealistic cop, Danny Wallace (Mark Wahlberg), who is unaware of how power and influence have compromised his superiors. When the Tongs boldly attempt to corrupt this young officer, Chen is forced to realign his loyalties.

GERMANY PROTESTS A LACK OF DOLBY DIGITAL SOUNDTRACKS Dolby Digital 5.1 not Dolby Surround

Darius Metzner, the webmaster of www.DVD-Inside.de is reporting that the young German DVD market faces a new threat: there seems to be a "German-Pro Logic-Only-Policy" developing at the German divisions of Columbia TriStar and Universal. After the initial release of region 2 European DVDs with excellent content and features, the latest releases lack German Dolby Digital 5.1 channel soundtracks, instead these new DVDs are Pro Logic only. Currently there is a petition running on the DVD Inside web site, which is collecting votes against this lack of commitment from these German home video companies. http://www.dvdinside.de/cgi-bin/dvd_petition.cgi

On October 26, 1999 Columbia TriStar Home Video will release on DVD ARLINGTON ROAD, a gripping contemporary thriller about the terrible truths that can hide behind everyday appearances. ARLINGTON ROAD is an intense, edge-of-your-seat journey that reveals just how little we know about the world around us… The film stars Jeff Bridges (Academy Award-nominee, "Starman"), Tim Robbins (Academy Award-nominee, "The Player"), Joan Cusack (Academy Award-nominee "In & Out") and Hope Davis ("Next Stop Wonderland").

SPECIAL FEATURES:

Widowed when his FBI agent wife is killed by a right-wing group, college professor Michael Faraday (Bridges) becomes obsessed with the culture of these groups—especially when his new neighbors, the all-American Oliver and Cheryl Lang (Robbins and Cusack), start acting suspiciously. With each twist, the mystery deepens and the question looms—is Faraday just consumed by fear and driven by paranoia, or has a lethal conspiracy been born on ARLINGTON ROAD? Suspenseful and provocative, the film weaves together the thematic strands of friendship and betrayal, trust and deceit, veiled congenial appearances and awful truths, not to mention the sometimes inseparable nature of good and evil.

Days become years and Emmeline (Brooke Shields) and Richard (Christopher Atkins) make a home for themselves surrounded by exotic creatures and nature’s beauty. As their relationship develops, John's confidence grows under Sydney's tutelage. He falls in love with a waitress and sometime hooker, Clementine (Gwyneth Paltrow, Academy Award-winner "Shakespeare in Love" and in with bad company in the form of Jimmy (Samuel L. Jackson, "A Time to Kill"), an obnoxious and dangerous small-time crook who openly challenges Sydney's influence.

Sydney sends the shaken couple up north until things cool off and it is then that Jimmy grabs the opportunity to play his trump card. Having learned of Sydney's previous occupation, that of a hit man, and Sydney's personal reason for taking John under his wing, Jimmy blackmails the old man. SLC PUNK AND THE INHERITORS COME TO DVD

On October 12, 1999 Columbia TriStar Home Video will release the following two titles on DVD:

SLC PUNK
SPECIAL FEATURES:

To grow up in America is to, at one point or another, rebel against the world around you. If you’re Stevo (Matthew Lillard, "She’s All That") and you live in Reagan-era Salt Lake City, then, well… you just have to rebel a little bit harder. To this recent grad, the world is his enemy and anarchy his religion. As he takes us on a guided tour of his life, we meet all sorts of punks, poseurs, mods, freaks and a few others best described as indescribable. Stevo’s ex-hippie father sees his lifestyle as a rite of passage and urges him to attend Harvard Law School like himself. Not to sell out to the system, but to buy in. For Stevo, underneath the mohawk haircuts, earrings and leather, the idea, painfully, has some merit. The question becomes: how do you stay hardcore and still hope for a life beyond?

THE INHERITORS

The brutal murder of the elderly, tyrannical and stingy farmer Hillinger neither surprises nor saddens his peasant farmhands or the town’s wealthy farming families. The unlikely beneficiaries of his farm, however, are his penniless farmhands, whom he perpetually insulted and humiliated. The farmhands, led by the young orphan Lukas (Simon Schwarz) and the defiant Emmy (Sophie Rois), shock the townspeople by deciding to work the property themselves rather than sell it to the wealthy and manipulative farmer Danninger (Ulrich Wildgruber). The light-hearted humor of the film gives way to suspense and drama as Danninger’s efforts beget a feud over Hillinger’s farm. He attempts to burn down the farm’s outbuildings, resulting in a violent reprisal from Lukas, who becomes a fugitive from the reprisal of the misinformed townspeople, jeopardizing all of the peasants’ dreams. A heart-pounding cat-and-mouse game ensues as Lukas attempts to evade the angry townsfolk and pursue his plans to flee to America.

DIGITAL LEISURE RELEASES SPACE ACE FOR DVD-VIDEO

Follow-up to Dragon’s Lair Now Available for DVD movie players

When Digital Leisure shipped Dragon’s Lair for DVD-Video late last year, it set a new standard for interactive gaming on set-top DVD movie players. Now with it’s release of Space Ace, the much awaited follow-up to Dragon’s Lair, DVD owners will be able to use the remote control for their DVD players to control the action as Ace battles the evil Commander Borf. As one of the first animated video games in history, Space Ace features non-stop video action. The evil Commander Borf has kidnapped Ace’s girlfriend, the beautiful Kimberly, and is plotting to enslave the Earth using his dreaded "Infanto Ray", a weapon that changes everyone it blasts into a helpless baby. Using the remote control from the DVD movie player, game enthusiasts can choose to guide Ace, or his weak alter-ego Dexter, through Borf’s strongholds to find and destroy the Infanto Ray, rescue Kimberly and save the Earth. Space Ace, the classic laser-disc based arcade game, features spectacular quality animation created by Don Bluth, a former Disney animator famous for his work on An American Tail, The Land Before Time and he also co-directed the more recent blockbuster Anastasia. In addition to the fully playable game, the Space Ace DVD-Video release contains exclusive interviews with Bluth and Rick Dyer, co-creators and designers of the game. A special "Watch" option allows players to view the entire game without requiring moves on the DVD remote. "Many DVD-Video owners don’t realize the hidden capabilities that are built into their machines," Elizabeth Foster, president of Digital Leisure said. "Space Ace, possibly the most complex DVD-Video title authored to date, makes use of real-time decision making and user input to determine the flow of the game. Space Ace is even more interactive that Dragon’s Lair, allowing the player the choose to play either Ace or Dexter on the fly." Following the release of Space Ace DVD-Video, Digital Leisure plans to release Space Ace DVD-ROM in September and Dragon’s Lair II: Time Warp for DVD-Video and DVD-ROM in October. Dragon’s Lair is currently available for DVD-Video, DVD-ROM and CD-ROM formats. Digital Leisure is a leading publisher of interactive DVD-ROM and DVD-Video titles. The company acquires and remasters existing video-intensive titles that would benefit from the superior video and audio quality of DVD.

SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE - SPECIAL EDITION TO BE RELEASED ON DVD SEPTEMBER 28, 1999

Columbia TriStar Home Video has announced the September 28, 1999 DVD release of the box-office smash SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE starring two-time Academy Award-winner Tom Hanks, ("Philadelphia" and "Forrest Gump"), Meg Ryan ("You’ve Got Mail") and Rosie O’Donnell ("A League of Their Own").

SPECIAL FEATURES

It's Christmas Eve and on this particular night radio talk show psychologist Marcia Fieldstone has asked her listening audience what they are wishing and dreaming of during this season of hope. A little boy, Jonah (Ross Malinger), who is tuned in from Seattle calls in his wish, a new wife for his father (Hanks) who has been widowed for a year and a half. Meanwhile, all the way across the country, punching buttons on her car radio as she drives from Baltimore to Washington, D.C., Annie Reed (Ryan) hears Jonah and is immediately captivated by him and his selfless Christmas wish. Like thousands, maybe even millions, of other listeners, Annie is especially moved when Jonah's dad is persuaded to join in the on-air conversation. And when, in his funny, sweet yet sad way, he begins to talk about how much he loved his wife, something extraordinary happens to Annie which she really isn't even aware of at the time. Something she has never experienced in her entire life. Something like...magic. Jonah and his dad are immediately besieged by countless letters from listeners reaching out to help, including thousands of marriage proposals from women across the country. Meanwhile, inspired in equal parts by Jonah's phone call and by classic Hollywood romance, Annie Reed eventually becomes completely convinced that it is her destiny to meet Sam, Jonah's lovely dad. And, as Annie sees it, there are just two minor problems. First, she is presently engaged to marry another man (Bill Pullman, "While You Were Sleeping") whom she does love. And, of course, Jonah's dad does not know yet that he and Annie are made for each other.

ANCHOR BAY DOES HITCHCOCK

It was producer David O. Selznick who brought a somewhat weighty English director to Hollywood- and the rest is history. That English director was, of course, the legendary Alfred Hitchcock. The collaboration between Selznick, and the soon to be "Master of Suspense" produced the Academy Award winning REBECCA, as well as the superb NOTORIOUS and SPELLBOUND. Of course, THE PARADINE CASE was something of a disappointment, but is an intriguing film because of its historic significance. Anchor Bay Entertainment will be releasing all four of these titles on DVD September 7 at a suggested retail price of $24.98.
