This information comes courtesy of Edwin Samuelson of DVD Maniacs.DON MAY OF SYNAPSE FILMS REBUTTAL TO VIDEO BUSINESS ARTICLE ON THEIR RELEASE OF TRIUMPH OF THE WILL
The following was sent to us by Don May Jr. of Synapse Films, I have decided to post it in its entirety.
To Whom It May Concern:
I have just read a small article in the June 12, 2000 issue of Video Business magazine regarding our upcoming DVD release of TRIUMPH OF THE WILL and I am shocked and dismayed. I felt the need to email my response to you about this article to set the record straight. I hope that you can share it with your readers. I feel it was a horrible piece of journalism that does not accurately reflect our beliefs or the almost half hour conversation I had with the Video Business interviewer, Enrique Rivero.
The article, entitled "Synapse Releases Nazi Film" is arguably an exploitive, unnecessary title. Right from the get go, the reader is drawn to the article with the word "nazi" and some readers may immediately think, based on our previous DVD titles, Synapse is only releasing this title because of the controversial content. This is untrue. There were many different ways to title this article and this would’ve been the last thing I wanted used. How about the following suggestion: "Synapse Releases TRIUMPH OF THE WILL". A much less exploitive title, don’t you think? The film’s name is well known enough that people interested would’ve been drawn to the text anyway.
The second paragraph states the disc will include DAY OF FREEDOM and then goes on to promote another competing companies product in an article about our release. Well, thanks a lot! Sure, the short film is available somewhere else, but writing this article and not mentioning the other features of our DVD does the release and our company a complete disservice. What about those other things I mentioned in the interview and my press release? Where are they listed? No mention of our DVDs audio commentary. No mention that the film will be our first RSDL (dual layer) title. No mention that we are giving a donation to the National Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. with each sale. Regardless of whom the commentary is by (we have not signed an agreement with the individual yet, but he has verbally said he would contribute. I opted not to mention the individual’s name during the interview for legal reasons) or how much the total donation would be (which was, at the time of the interview, still being negotiated) these items should’ve been mentioned and they weren't.
Of all the dialogue between Mr. Rivero and myself, I cannot believe that I am quoted with that horribly written sentence stated in the third paragraph. The article quotes me as saying "This movie is historically one of the most sought after ever made." If memory serves me correctly, I said (among many other things that aren’t even mentioned) that TRIUMPH OF THE WILL is one of the most historically significant films ever made. Out of the entire conversation, THIS one sentence is what they quote me as saying. I went into detail about why we were releasing the film with Mr. Rivero, including that we felt what we were doing was important for film preservation. I mentioned it could be used in schools and universities as an educational tool. I even mentioned we were using elements provided to us by Robert A. Harris, an individual who has been very important to the preservation of many classic films like Universal’s VERTIGO and Columbia’s LAWRENCE OF ARABIA and that the Museum of Modern Art was providing us with photos and pictures from their archives. I guess Mr. Rivero deemed these points as unimportant for your readers but I do not share his judgment or editorial opinions regarding this piece.

Don May, Jr.

HUNDREDS TURN OUT TO MEET THE GREEN MILE WRITER/DIRECTOR FRANK DARABONT AT DVD SIGNING
Studio City, Calif., June 14, 2000 -- Not green and not quite a mile, the line at Dave's Video, The Laser Place in Studio City stretched completely around the store as hundreds of fans waited for 9 hours -- from 4 p.m. 'til 1 a.m. -- to meet THE GREEN MILE's writer/director Frank Darabont. Darabont was there to sign DVDs of the Best Picture Academy Academy Award® nominee which debuts today from Warner Home Video. Also on hand was Sherry Vrooman, Special Events Coordinator for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation, which will receive a portion from each DVD sale.
"This is the coolest DVD signing I've ever been to," one fan said. Everyone lined up at 4 p.m. outside the Studio City store for the 6:30 p.m. signing. Initially scheduled to be there for 2 hours, Darabont stayed 6 and finally met the last fan at close to 1:00 a.m. The director graciously took the time to speak with every person in line, offer advice to young director/screenwriters, pose for photos, sign DVDs, posters, magazines and whatever else the crowd brought to him.
Several fans with video cameras asked Darabont to sign them; one asked Darabont to shoot him and his friends. Darabont obliged, then focused the camera toward himself and said, "This has been A Frank Darabont Film."
Virtually everyone who stepped up said that "The Shawshank Redemption" was their favorite all-time movie. John McCauley from Agoura Hills kiddingly asked Darabont to sign McCauley's 5-month- old baby, Sean. "I couldn't get day-care but I'm a huge fan and wouldn't miss this," said McCauley.
Linda Lukas, Vice President of Dave's Video, The Laser Place and host for the event noted, "most people when they sign try to finish quickly -- not Frank. He really likes the connection with movie fans." Ruben Ontal, a Los Angeles city worker, arrived three hours early to be the first fan in line. Ontal, who attends every signing at Dave's Video, The Laser Place said, "I only collect good movies, and 'THE GREEN MILE' is definitely good."
Impressed by how genuine Darabont was, Chris Parrish of Studio City commented "it's amazing how much time he took to talk to everybody and how he drew them out. Everyone loved him." One of the last to meet Darabont was a woman who was close to having a baby. Darabont joked, "were you pregnant when you came in here?"
As the evening drew to a close Darabont, who is writing six days a week to finish the screenplay for his next project, shook the stiffness out of his hand and said, "The only other time I signed my name this much was on my mortgage application." Then he announced happily, "This was my one night out this week and it was great!"
