KEN BURNS'S JAZZ AVAILABLE AS A DELUXE BOX SET FROM PBS HOME VIDEO AND WARNER HOME VIDEO

Critically Acclaimed Film Available On Vhs And DVD With Never-Before-Seen Footage

On January 2, 2001, PBS Home Video and Warner Home Video (WHV) present Jazz, the new and highly praised work from award winning filmmaker Ken Burns. Jazz is the final installment in Burns's trilogy on American life, which began with The Civil War and continued with Baseball. Jazz is available as a ten-VHS set and a ten-DVD set ($149.88 VHS SRP/$199.92 DVD SRP), both including exclusive, never-before-seen footage. The film's television premiere expected to be seen by more than 35 million viewers - is a General Motors Mark of Excellence Presentation and will be aired in ten installments between January 8 and January 31, 2001.

"If the Civil War defined us," said Ken Burns, "and baseball was a way to understand what we became, then jazz - in addition to being a pretty objective witness to the 20th century - was also a vision of the redemptive future possibilities of our republic." Over the years, Burns has become America's biographer on film; his works have won multiple awards and garnered record public television audiences. As historian Stephen Ambrose noted, "More people get their history from Ken Burns than any other source." Sales of Ken Burns home videos have exceeded 5.5 million copies.

Declared "amazing" and "a spell-binding tour" by The New York Times, Jazz tells the story of this singularly American art form with more than 75 interviews, 500 pieces of music, 2,400 stills and 2,000 archival film clips, many never-before-seen. The 18-hour epic is narrated by Keith David and features first-person quotes from Samuel L. Jackson, Matthew Broderick, Delroy Lindo and many others. The film focuses on the careers of such giants as Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington and Charlie Parker. The film is directed by Burns, produced by Burns and Lynn Novick and written by Geoffrey C. Ward.

Loaded with bonus features, the DVD set includes the 20-minute "Making of Jazz" featurette, comprehensive background information on the more than 500 songs heard in Jazz, three full-length performances that will not seen on the PBS broadcast, motion menus and a DVD-ROM link to the Jazz website.

" WHV is excited to release box sets of Ken Bums's highly anticipated series Jazz on VHS and DVD in conjunction with its initial PBS broadcast," said Mark Horak, WHV Senior Vice President, Marketing. "A fascinating retrospective of a treasured musical genre, Jazz offers viewers an in-depth look at the musical stylings that defined an American art form."

"Through The Civil War, Baseball and his other remarkable films, Ken Burns has kept America enthralled for more than a decade," said Dan Hamby, Vice President, PBS Home Video. "PBS Home Video is delighted to bring Jazz, a quintessential Burns documentary, to home video and DVD."

A coffee-table companion book from Knopf, Jazz: A History of America's Music by Geoffrey C. Ward and Ken Burns, will hit bookstores in November 2000. A 20-song soundtrack, a 5-CD box set and 22 single artist CDs will be available from Sony Music's Columbia/Legacy Recordings and the Verve Music Group, also in November of this year.

The ten installments (videocassettes/DVDs) of Jazz trace its musical history chronologically by the following titles: (1) "Gumbo" (Beginnings to 1917); (2) "The Gift" (1917-1924); (3) "Our Language" (1924-1928); (4) "The True Welcome" (1929-1935); (5) "Swing: Pure Pleasure" (1935-1937); (6) "Swing: The Velocity of Celebration" (1937-1939); (7) "Dedicated to Chaos" (1940-1945); (8) "Risk" (1945-1956); (9) "The Adventure" (1956-1961); and (10) "A Masterpiece by Midnight" (1961-present).

ABOUT THE MUSIC

Highlighted by edgy driving alternative rock music, TITAN A.E. is loaded with breathtaking feature quality animation and boasts a spectacular soundtrack. The film breaks new ground in motion picture music and sound. Instead of traditional animated film music, in which an orchestral underscore is closely related to pop songs by a specific artist, TITAN A.E. features cutting-edge rock music from today’s hottest bands. Five time Grammy winning songwriter and record producer Glen Ballard was given the opportunity with this film to marry exciting music against unique visuals that people have not seen before. Highlighted by such pop rock bands as "Lit," "Bliss," "Powerman 5000," "Electrasy," "Jamiroquai" and many others, the soundtrack to this film features songs from these groups that reference a specific character, emotion or action in the film. The music’s principal thematic approach follows Cale’s story, which goes from innocence to the coming of age.
