WARNER HOME VIDEO’S LONG-AWAITED DVD RELEASE OF OSCAR’S® MOST HONORED MOVIE BEN-HUR GOES DIGITAL FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER MARCH 13

New to DVD are Heston Commentary, Recently Discovered Screen Tests & Outstanding New Dolby Digital 5.1 Remix Including Movie’s Overture

On March 13, Warner Home Video (WHV) will introduce for the first time ever the long-awaited DVD of the Academy Award®-winning MGM film classic BEN-HUR. Starring Charlton Heston and directed by William Wyler, BEN-HUR captured 12 nominations and received 11 Oscars®, including Best Picture. The DVD will sell at the suggested price of $24.98.

"We’re proud to be releasing this DVD of BEN-HUR," said Mark Horak, WHV’s senior vice president, marketing. "In addition to being digitally transferred and enhanced for widescreen TV, the disc has a new Dolby Digital soundtrack remix, and the results are spectacular. We are also especially pleased that Charlton Heston has recorded a new commentary relating his experiences on the production."

BEN-HUR is one of two films (the other, "Raintree County") originally photographed in MGM Camera 65, the widest aspect ratio (2.76:1) ever used theatrically. In a single frame, Camera 65 was able to yield an image that, while extremely wide, was still stunningly sharp and detailed. By the time BEN-HUR reached the television screen, more than half the image was lost due to cropping needed for TV's squarer screen (1.33:1 aspect ratio). Although later VHS and laserdisc widescreen versions restored the scope of the image, the limited resolution of those formats pales in comparison to the miracle of DVD.

On the left, BEN-HUR in its original widescreen aspect ratio of 2.76:1, meaning the screen is 2.76 times wider than its height. On the right is an example of television’s pan and scan version, with the aspect ratio of 1.33:1 -- more than half the picture has been lost. In the new DVD version, the home viewer will be able to see the film in its original theatrical format aided by increased clarity and detail the DVD format’s resolution provides.

The The all-new digital transfer and stereo remix of BEN-HUR DVD features are: the Charlton Heston commentary, the new digitally remastered picture and soundtrack (Dolby Digital 5.1), newly-discovered screen tests of the final and near final cast, including Leslie Nielson, Cesare Danova and Haya Harareet, the addition of the seldom-heard Overture and Entr’acte music, the behind-the-scenes documentary, Ben-Hur: The Making of an Epic which , the original theatrical trailer and an on-the-set photo gallery featuring Wyler, producer Sam Zimbalist, cameraman Robert Surtees and others.

Charlton Heston stars in the title role of Ben-Hur as a Jewish nobleman in biblical Palestine who is drawn into a heroic odyssey. After being enslaved by the Romans, he wins his freedom by saving his master in a fierce sea battle and wreaks vengeance against his tormentors during a furious chariot race, ultimately becoming a man of peace after a fateful encounter with Jesus Christ. Based on the novel, BEN-HUR: A TALE OF THE CHRIST, by General Lew Wallace, BEN-HUR also starred Jack Hawkins, Haya Harareet, Stephen Boyd, Hugh Griffith, Martha Scott, along with Cathy O’Donnell and Sam Jaffe. The movie was produced by Sam Zimbalist.

MGM remade the quintessential motion picture epic from their own magnificent 1925 silent film of the same name which cost $4 million, and starred silent screen idols Ramon Novarro and Francis X. Bushman. Wyler’s version, which cost $15 million and was the most expensive Hollywood film at the time, ultimately achieved blockbuster status.

BEN-HUR’s Oscars® were for Best Picture, Best Actor (Heston), Best Supporting Actor (Hugh Griffith), Best Director, Best Music Score (Miklos Rozsa), Best Color Art Direction/Set Decoration, Best Color Cinematography, Best Color Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Sound and Best Special Effects.

While Hollywood veteran Karl Tunberg received BEN-HUR’s sole screenplay credit, it’s widely known that others contributed to the final version of the script. They included then-MGM contract writer Gore Vidal and renowned Broadway and English playwrights Maxwell Anderson, S.N. Behrman and Christopher Fry. Andrew Marton and Yakima Canutt, the second-unit directors, created the two outstanding action sequences --the sea battle and the chariot race.

Prior to the release of the DVD, BEN-HUR will be getting its own page on the Warner Home Video Web Site, www.warnervideo.com.

DVD re-release will include exceptional added value elements including new featurettes and original advertising materials

DVD ADDED VALUE ELEMENTS

On February 27, 2001 Columbia TriStar Home Video will release the a special edition DVD of DR. STRANGELOVE, director Stanley Kubrick's 1964 tale of an insane General whose actions begin a process leading to nuclear holocaust that a war room of politicians and generals frantically try to stop.

SYNOPSIS

Stanley Kubrick's  brilliant classic is the perfect showcase for the versatility of Peter Sellers,    who takes on three distinctive roles in the film.  Funny and frightening, this black comedy about a group of military men who plan a nuclear apocalypse seems as relevant today as ever. Fueled by paranoia and a fanatical sense of patriotism, two psychotic generals - U.S. Air Force Commander Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden) and Joint Chief of Staff "Buck" Turgidson (George C. Scott) - trigger an ingenious, irrevocable scheme to attack Russia's strategic targets with nuclear bombs. The brains behind the scheme belong to Dr. Strangelove (Sellers), a wheelchair-bound nuclear scientist with bizarre ideas about mankind's future. Rendered helpless to stop the bombers is the President of the United States (Sellers) and Ripper's executive officer, Captain Mandrake (Sellers) - the only man who can stop them.

COLUMBIA TRISTAR HOME VIDEO TO RELEASE "32 SHORT FILMS ABOUT GLENN GOULD" ON DVD

DVD ADDED VALUE ELEMENTS

SYNOPSIS

Internationally renowned pianist Glenn Gould had all the marks of genius-blinding talent, a craving for perfection and absolute bullheadedness. In THIRTY TWO SHORT FILMS ABOUT GLENN GOULD, director Francois Girard goes directly to the center of Gould's ideas, his passions, and his music.

Using thirty-two elegantly constructed vignettes, which span Gould's life from age four until his untimely death at age fifty, the film achieves the rare balance between play and conceptual rigor. Each of the thirty-two selections dramatizes a variation on the theme of Glenn Gould, depicting the many diverse aspects of his life-from artist to financier, humorist to nature- lover, recluse to iconoclast-and the result is a powerful impressionistic mosaic of genius. "A fascinating guy and a fascinating film!" - Gene Siskel.

COLUMBIA TRISTAR HOME VIDEO RETURNS TO THE BIG TOP WITH THE NEWEST FILMED STAGE PRODUCTION FROM CIRQUE DU SOLEILT

World-Renowned Circus Troupe Presents Their Latest Captivating Show - DRALION Available January 23, 2001 on Videocassette & DVD

Newly Repackaged QUIDAM VHS & DVD And DRALION/QUIDAM Cirque du Soleil Two-Pack Also Available

Following the successful release of Cirque du Soleil's first award-winning filmed stage show production QUIDAM, Columbia TriStar Home Video will release the world renowned circus troupe's newest production DRALION, onto videocassette and DVD on January 23, 2001.  QUIDAM will also be available in a newly repackaged videocassette and DVD, along with a specially-designed collectable Cirque du Soleil two-pack on video and DVD featuring both titles.

Acclaimed by an audience of over 23 million worldwide, Cirque du Soleil is a distinctive and remarkable troupe that has reinvented and revolutionized the circus arts.  Their 12th breathtaking stage production DRALION, which has captivated audiences from start to finish during its current North American tour, is an astonishing, theatrical blend of circus arts and street performance, combined with spectacular costumes and fantastical sets, staged to spellbinding music and magical lighting.

Hailed by audiences and critics alike, DRALION is the fusion of ancient Chinese circus tradition and the avant-garde approach of Cirque du Soleil, a contemporary collage of the original and the eclectic, the primitive and the postmodern.  DRALION is the celebration of life and the four elements that maintain the natural order: air, earth, water and fire.  By propelling these four pillars of the universe into a futuristic dimension, DRALION is a dynamic performance that seems to transcend the boundaries of the imagination and lead us into a dreamscape with a new and sparkling perspective.

Featuring 54 artists from eight different countries (Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, France, Ivory Coast, Ukraine and the United States), including a house troupe of 37 Chinese acrobats, these multi-talented performers present a variety of high-caliber acts including ballet on lights, hoop diving, aerial pas de deux, bamboo poles, juggling, teeterboard, double trapeze, and handbalancing.

Filmed live on stage in San Francisco, the DRALION television special is directed by David Mallet (from the original stage production directed by Guy Caron).
