Christian Bale made his screen debut in this stirring tale of a young British boy's life-changing odyssey during the Japanese occupation of China.  Also starring were John Malkovich, Miranda Richardson, Nigel Havers and Joe Pantoliano.  Predating Spielberg 's Academy-Award®-winning film, "Saving Private Ryan," which was acclaimed for accurately depicting the physical and emotional horrors of soldiers at war, EMPIRE OF THE SUN presents the director's masterful rendering of those same horrors from the vantage point of a gifted and imaginative young boy.

The DVD will include the following special features:

About EMPIRE OF THE SUN

EMPIRE OF THE SUN was first released in 1987, directed by Steven Spielberg from a Tom Stoppard screenplay based on J.G. Ballard's autobiographical novel.  The film was produced by Spielberg, Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall.  Cinematography was by Allen Daviau and original music was composed by John Williams.

In EMPIRE OF THE SUN, Jim (Bale), a precocious young British boy living a sheltered life among the privileged in Shanghai, is separated from his parents as panic-stricken mobs flee to sanctuary after the army of Imperial Japan invades China.  Left behind and forced to fend for himself, Jim hooks up with Basie (Malkovich) and Frank (Pantoliano), a pair of seedy American merchant seamen, who are busy hustling while hiding out from the Japanese.

Initially shielded from the horror of what is happening by his child-like wonder, Jim quickly masters the scams Basie and Frank use to survive.  When the Japanese intern all three, Jim becomes warped, as the horrible truth of what is happening begins to break through his defenses.  Tapping into the soul of this innocent boy as he struggles to survive, Spielberg captures the staggering surrealism, tragedy and beauty of war.

ACADEMY AWARD WINNING DOCUMENTARY FEATURE INTO THE ARMS OF STRANGERS BRINGS OUTSTANDING STORY OF COURAGE AND HOPE TO DVD ON AUGUST 28

Narrated by Academy Award Winner Judi Dench, Exceptional DVD Features Offer a Riveting Look at a Stunning World War II Rescue Mission

On August 28, a powerful story of enduring love, loss and survival will inspire audiences around the world as this year's Academy Award* winning Best Documentary Feature, Into the Arms of Strangers: Stories of the Kindertransport, becomes available on VHS and DVD. A daughter's powerful homage to her mother through a personal journey into the hardships of war, Into the Arms of Strangers is priced at $24.98 SRP on DVD.

In the months before World War II, an extraordinary rescue operation aided the youngest victims of Nazi terror.  Over ten thousand Jewish and other children were transported from German-held lands to foster homes and hostels in Great Britain.  Some of the children built new family ties.  Some endured the Blitz.  Some, amazingly, found ways to liberate their own parents from Adolf Hitler's tyranny; most, however, never saw their parents again.  And, all have unforgettable stories to tell.  The film is narrated by Shakespeare in Love Oscar* winner (1997) and Chocolat Oscar* nominee (2000) Judi Dench.

From Mark Jonathan Harris, writer/director of the Academy Award*-winning The Long Way Home, and producer Deborah Oppenheimer (whose mother was one of the 10,000 children) comes this superb, Academy Award*-winning documentary feature filled with rare archival footage and featuring gripping remembrances from the child survivors, rescuers and parents of the heroic Kindertransport. "This moving tribute," Richard Schickel wrote in Time, "has the power to summon us to our better selves."

NEW WILLY WONKA DVD TO BE FULL FRAME ONLY

I was rather disappointed when the new DVD edition of WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY showed up on my doorstep and it contained only a full frame transfer. From all previous reports, this new 30th Anniversary Edition of WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY was also to contain a 16:9 enhanced wide screen version of the film. Obviously, someone at Warner felt that a "kid's movie" didn't require a 16:9 enhanced wide screen presentation. Without question, this has turned out to be a very bad decision on someone's part.

Since the news broke that the WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY DVD would contain only a full frame transfer, there has been a huge consumer backlash on the Internet. Many have already canceled their pre-orders for the DVD. In addition, an on-line petition has already sprung up, plus there is a huge discussion thread about this debacle on The Home Theater Forum, as well as Warner's own discussion forum. Disappointed devotees of the film have also created some amusing web graphics to drive their point across (see left).

Perhaps with enough consumer pressure Warner will acquiesce and give fans of WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY what they want- a 16:9 enhanced wide screen presentation of the film on DVD. Those that wish their voices to be heard in regard to the full frame only DVD release of WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY should do the following:

The boys go in pursuit, find the bad guys' hideout, subdue the bandits and recover the money.
