Based on Britain's controversial series of the same name, QUEER AS FOLK is about the lives of a group of gay men and women living in Pittsburgh. Focusing on their relationships, their careers, their loves and ambitions, the series is a brave, realistic, funny and sometimes graphic portrayal of society that has never been seen before on U.S. television.

SYNOPSIS

QUEER AS FOLK is about the lives of a group of gay men and women living in Pittsburgh who, like anyone, are focused on their relationships, careers, loves and ambitions.  The series is a realistic, funny and sometimes graphic portrayal of a minority community living in present-day society.  It's not West Hollywood, it's not the Castro and it's not Chelsea. It may be a small world - a gay Main Street with a couple of bars, a disco, a few shops and a diner - but its reverberations are universal.  QUEER AS FOLK is an unapologetic celebration of life in its varied forms.  And as always, in the differences we discover the similarities that make us all human.

Brian Kinney (Gale Harold), is a sexual animal, always on the prowl for his next conquest.  Michael Novotny (Hal Sparks) is his best friend. Justin Taylor (Randy Harrison) is a 17-year-old boy whose life is changed one night when he experiences sex and what he thinks is love, for the first time.  Emmett Honeycutt (Peter Paige) is the most flamboyant of his friends and wears it with pride.  Ted Schmidt (Scott Lowell) is an accountant whose fatal flaw is a lust for 20-somethings who don't return his interest. Debbie Novotny (Sharon Gless) is Michael's eccentric mother - vehemently proud of her gay son.  Dr. David Cameron (Chris Potter) is the dreamboat chiropractor who makes Michael forget about Brian, for a while.  Lindsay Peterson (Thea Gill), an art teacher and Melanie Marcus (Michelle Clunie), a lawyer, are a loving lesbian couple who decide to have a child sired by Brian (whom Melanie despises), not realizing exactly how complicated and entwined their lives will become.

ACCLAIMED FILMMAKER KEN BURNS'S RIVETING DOCUMENTARY MARK TWAIN AVAILABLE FROM WARNER HOME VIDEO AND PBS HOME VIDEO JANUARY 8

Special DVD Edition Offers Viewers Interview Outtakes, a "Making of"Interview with Ken Burns and Two Short Documentaries

He was considered, in his time, to be the funniest man on Earth.  On January 8, 2002, Warner Home Video (WHV) and PBS Home Video offer the definitive story of this compelling genius, Mark Twain, as seen through the eyes of filmmaker Ken Burns.  The fifth film in Burns's popular American Lives series and featuring interviews with Hal Holbrook, Arthur Miller and leading Twain scholars, Mark Twain will be broadcast on PBS as a two-part program on January 14 and 15, 2002 and is expected to draw 14 million viewers nationwide.  Timed to hit stores one week prior to the PBS airing, MARK TWAIN will be priced at $24.98 SRP for a double-cassette VHS and at $29.98 SRP for a single-disc DVD.

A popular humorist, philosopher and social satirist, Mark Twain was the well-known nom-de-plume of writer Samuel Clemens, the nation's first literary celebrity.  One of the most quoted men of his time, he was born in 1835, the year Haley's Comet passed over, and vowed that he would not die until he saw the famous comet.  He died in 1910 -- the day after the comet's return.  Tracing Twain's rise from his humble birth in Missouri to his prosperous life in Connecticut as the nation's best-selling author, Mark Twain reveals a compelling portrait of the father of American literature.

The DVD-18 edition of MARK TWAIN contains interview outtakes, twelve great Twain quotes and photographs, a "Making of" interview with Ken Burns and the short documentaries Ken Burns: Making History and A Conversation with Ken Burns.

Exciting tie-ins and cross promotions, including the companion book Mark Twain (to be released in November 2001, by Knopf), the soundtrack CD (to be released in October 2001, by Sony) and the Connecticut Tourism Vacation Guide (in connection with the Mark Twain House, beginning February 2002), will lend great support to this title.

SYNOPSIS:

Nearly three years in the making and drawing from 63 hours of material, thousands of archival photographs and nearly 20 interviews with top writers and Twain scholars, Mark Twain is the story of an extraordinary life - one full of rollicking adventure, stupendous success and crushing defeat, hilarious comedy and unbearable tragedy.  Told primarily through the words of Twain himself and narrated by Keith David (the voice of Jazz), viewers of all ages will be personally introduced to this compelling yet contradictory genius, who said with some justification, "I am not an American, I am the American."

Anxious to fund research for his new theory of velociraptor intelligence, renowned paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) is persuaded by a wealthy adventurer (William H. Macy) and his wife (Tea Leoni) to accompany them on an aerial tour of Isla Sorna. This infamous island, once InGen’s site B, has become both a primordial breeding ground for John Hammond’s magnificent creations and a magnet for thrill-seekers eager to encounter them.  When a tragic accident maroons the party of seven, Grant discovers the true reason his deceptive hosts have invited him along. In their perilous attempt to escape with their lives, the dwindling group encounters terrifying new creatures undisclosed by InGen, and Grant is forced to learn the dreadful implications of his raptor intelligence theory firsthand.

THE CRITERION COLLECTION PRESENTS HÄXAN & THE VANISHING ON DVD

HÄXAN
$39.95

Grave robbing, torture, possessed nuns, and a satanic Sabbath: Benjamin Christensen's legendary film uses a series of dramatic vignettes to explore the scientific hypothesis that the witches of the middle ages suffered the same hysteria as turn-of-the-century psychiatric patients. But the film itself is far from serious - instead it's a witches' brew of the scary, gross, and hilarious. The Criterion Collection is proud to present two versions of this genre-defying "documentary," for the first time ever on DVD.

SPECIAL FEATURES

THE VANISHING
$29.95

Directed by George Sluizer

Starring Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu, Gene Bervoets, Johanna ter Steege, Gwen Eckhaus, Bernadette Le Saché, Tania Latarjet, Lucille Glenn, Roger Souza, Caroline Appéré, Pierre Forget, Didier Rousset, Raphaeline, Robert Lucibello, David Bayle and Doumee

In Dutch with optional English subtitles

A young man begins an obsessive search for his girlfriend after she mysteriously disappears during their sunny vacation getaway. His three-year investigation draws the attention of her abductor, a seemingly mild-mannered professor who, in truth, harbors a diabolically clinical and calculating mind. When the kidnapper contacts the man and promises to reveal his lover's fate, The Vanishing unfolds with intense precision, culminating in a genuinely chilling finale that has unnerved audiences around the world.

UNIVERSAL STUDIOS HOME VIDEO IS LETTING THE DOG OUT AGAIN, WITH BEETHOVEN’S 4TH

Universal City, California, August 8, 2001 -- On December 4, 2001, Universal Studios Home Video is bringing America¹s favorite dog back home with the DVD and VHS release of BEETHOVEN’S 4TH, produced by Universal Home Entertainment Productions. The VHS version is priced to own at $19.98 SRP, while the DVD version retails at $24.98 SRP.  Order close for VHS is November 6 and October 23 for DVD.

It's double the dog, as the irrepressible Beethoven stretches his super-sized talent and stars as both himself and the overly well-bred show dog, Michelangelo.  Human stars Judge Reinhold and Julia Sweeney also return in this all-new "Prince and the Pauper"-inspired adventure that is filled with enough laughs, surprises and smart dog tricks to keep the entire family begging for more. BEETHOVEN’S 4TH on DVD contains the added value of feature commentaries, deleted scenes, cast and filmmaker bios, production notes, and theatrical trailer.

Universal Home Entertainment Productions (UHEP) is involved in the development and production of direct-to-video movies, live action and animation television, and original programming for the Internet.  These include: the best-selling video series, The Land Before Time, which was released theatrically in 1988 and has generated eight direct-to-video sequels; the live-action franchises, K9, Beethoven and Tremors; and the animated television series "Woody Woodpecker" and the recently-announced "The Mummy". UHEP includes Universal Cartoon Studios (UCS), Universal's animation production facility, which produces television and video titles, as well as a variety of other projects, including animated shorts.

Synopsis

The Newton family is trying valiantly to manage life with the larger-than-life Beethoven, while Richard (Judge Reinhold) has become a work-at-home Dad and Beth (Julia Sweeney) heads back to the office.  Richard's work and Beth's new work wardrobe are toast in the presence of the giant paws and non-stop drool of the well-meaning but destructively demonstrative Beethoven, and the kids (Joe Pichler and Michaela Gallo) desperately try to save the day with obedience training.  The results are disastrous at first, but seem to miraculously take hold when a mix-up at the park switches Beethoven with his dead-ringer Michelangelo, an overly well-bred show dog from the upwardly-repressed Sedgewick family manor.  Chandelier-rattling chaos at the Sedgewick's and a strangely unwelcome quiet at the Newton's create huge problems that only the big-hearted St. Bernhard can lick.
