MIDDLE-EARTH COMES HOME-- THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING ARRIVES ON DVD AND VHS AUGUST 6TH "SPECIAL EXTENDED EDITION" TO FOLLOW NOVEMBER 12

New Line Home Entertainment announced the forthcoming release of THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING on DVD and VHS at a gala event at the historic Warner Bros. studio lot. THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING will be available in two distinctly different versions on both DVD and VHS formats, on August 6th, and November 12, 2002.

On August 6, New Line Home Entertainment will unveil the award-winning theatrical version of the film on DVD and VHS. The DVD will contain one of the greatest sneak previews in movie history, featuring a ten-minute behind the scenes preview of The Two Towers, the second installment of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. This glance, more than four months before the theatrical release of The Two Towers on December 18th, 2002, will offer a never-before-seen look at the central panel of director Peter Jackson's (The Frighteners, Heavenly Creatures) masterful cinematic triptych. This double-DVD set includes the PG-13 theatrical version of the film, and a second disc with over two hours of special features and extra content.

A "Special Extended Edition" of THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING will arrive in stores November 12. This extended edition of the film contains more than 30 minutes of never- before-seen footage created for the home video release. This version of the film, available on DVD and VHS, will likely have an R rating. The "Special Extended DVD Edition" will be contained in a four-disc set with two discs containing the film, and two discs with more than six hours of added content, produced specifically for the DVD. These extras will plunge the viewer into the complex landscape of Middle-earth, and reveal how Peter Jackson and his team of skilled artists and technicians created a painstakingly beautiful, and faithful re-creation of Tolkien's world.

A collector's DVD gift set will also be released on November 12 in time for the holiday season. This gift set will include the "Special Extended Edition" with box art packaging conceived and designed by famed Tolkien illustrator Alan Lee. Included with the DVD are custom bookends designed and sculpted by Sideshow Weta, the artists that crafted the astonishing theatrical visual effects for The Lord of the Rings. The gift set will also include the National Geographic "Beyond the Movie" DVD, containing two previously unreleased featurettes and a photo gallery. These extras are topped off with a set of exclusive, collectible Decipher game cards.

"We couldn't wait to put the Ring in consumers' hands," says New Line Home Entertainment President and Chief Operating Officer, Stephen Einhorn, explaining the decision to issue two staggered releases. "While Peter Jackson completes post-production work on The Two Towers and The Return of the King, we felt it necessary to bring Middle-earth to home theaters as soon as possible. The August 6th release will include footage from The Two Towers --- along with other fantastic features that fans of the DVD format have come to expect. The special four-disc set arriving in November is being completed at the same time as Jackson works on The Two Towers, and includes Jackson's director's commentary, additional scenes, and other extras that are sure to delight even the most avid Ring fans."

"One Ring To Rule Them All"

New Line Cinema's highest grossing box office hit ever, the critically acclaimed, award-winning THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING has become nothing short of a worldwide phenomenon. Co-written and directed by Peter Jackson, THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING is based on the first volume of J.R.R. Tolkien's trilogy of Middle-earth, itself long revered as a literary and linguistic masterpiece. (Tolkien, a celebrated philologist, invented "Elvish," a language with its own laws, roots, and inflections, while still a student at Oxford.)

One of the biggest box office smashes of 2001, THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING appeared on over 150 national year-end critics' top ten lists and led the movie award nominations season. In February, 2002, THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING received thirteen Academy Award® nominations --- the most of any film released in 2001 --- making it one of the most honored films in Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences history. Only two films, Titanic (1997) and All About Eve (1950), have ever received more nominations, with fourteen each.

Of its thirteen Academy Award® nominations --- including nods for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Ian McKellen), and Best Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published --- THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING received four Oscars, tying for the most honored film of the evening: Achievement In Music In Connection With Motion Pictures (Howard Shore), Achievement In Cinematography (Andrew Lesnie), Achievement In Visual Effects (Jim Rygiel, Randall William Cook, Richard Taylor, and Mark Stetson), and Achievement In Makeup (Peter Owen and Richard Taylor).

Honored with the American Film Institute's Movie of the Year Award for 2001, and recipient of the National Board of Review's Special Achievement in Filmmaking Award, THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING garnered four Golden Globe nominations including Best Dramatic Motion Picture. Of the twelve British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award nominations, THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING won five: Best Film, David Lean Award For Achievement in Direction, Special Visual Effects, Makeup and Hair, and the Orange Film of the Year (voted by the public).

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING Film Synopsis

An epic vision of good versus evil, THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING recounts the heroic quest of Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood), a peaceful Hobbit entrusted with a terrible responsibility. Placed in possession of the omnipotent One Ring --- lost for centuries and containing the Dark Lord Sauron's "cruelty, his malice, and his will to dominate all life" --- Frodo must travel through Middle-earth to the land of Mordor in order to destroy the ring in the fires of Mount Doom where it was forged.

Frodo is accompanied on his journey by a nine-member assemblage, the Fellowship of the Ring. They are: Gandalf The Grey (Ian McKellen), a good wizard and mentor to Frodo; Aragorn, aka Strider (Viggo Mortensen), a noble warrior and future king of Gondor; Boromir (Sean Bean), a fierce soldier of Gondor; Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) an ax-wielding dwarf; Legolas (Orlando Bloom), an expert elf archer; and hobbits Samwise Gamgee (Sean Astin), Peregrin "Pippin" Took (Billy Boyd), and Meriadoc "Merry" Brandybuck (Dominic Monaghan).

The Fellowship is aided in their quest by Elf Princess Arwen (Liv Tyler), Elf Queen Galadriel (Cate Blanchett), and Lord Elrond (Hugo Weaving), whose knowledge of the One Ring brings to light the true danger and importance of the Fellowship's collective journey. Relentlessly pursued by Lord Sauron's dark riders, marauding Orcs, cave trolls, and goblins summoned by evil wizard Saruman the White (Christopher Lee), the Fellowship must resist the ring's limitless powers of corruption. Shot entirely on location in majestic New Zealand, THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING ends as the Fellowship is disbanded.

The second film of the trilogy, The Two Towers, traces the journey of Frodo and Sam as they venture deeper into the land of the enemy --- with the mysterious Gollum serving as their guide --- while their companions in the Fellowship struggle to rescue the captured Hobbits Merry and Pippin.

SYNOPSIS

In 1950 , at the height of the Cold War in Communist-ruled Czechoslovakia, Franta Slama (Ondrej Vetchy), a man in his early 40s, is confined to a labor camp as  an "enemy of the people." Slama is an ex RAF (Royal Air Force) Czech pilot who flew against the Czech government during World War II. The new totalitarian Communist regime deemed him contaminated by Western Ideals of democracy and freedom. As such, he has become a potential threat to the State. We flashback to March 1939, just before world peace is irredeemably shattered. Franta congratulates his prot'g', fresh faced young trainee pilot Karel Vojtisek (Krystof Hadek) for passing his flying test. Soon afterwards, Franta and Karel escape Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia and reach England where they join the RAF. Soon, both men fall in love with the same woman, Susan (Tara Fitzgerald). For Karel, Susan is his first love and the conflicts of love and war ultimately test the men's friendship to its limit.

GOOFY GAGS AND SLAPSTICK STUNTS FILL MAY 21 DVD DEBUT OF THE VILLAIN, STARRING FILM LEGEND KIRK DOUGLAS AND (A VERY YOUNG) ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER

Silver-screen icon Kirk Douglas and a pre-superstar Arnold Schwarzenegger get down and dirty - not to mention mighty silly - in 1979's THE VILLAIN, making its first-ever appearance on DVD on May 21 from Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment.

Directed with giddy abandon by Hal Needham (Smokey and the Bandit, The Cannonball Run), the film is more than a spoof of Westerns - it's a live-action cartoon inspired by the zany, animated hijinks of the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote.  THE VILLAIN is filled with unbelievable stunts and screwball humor that fills the screen with human versions of gags moviegoers may have thought were possible only in cartoons. Douglas plays "Cactus Jack" Slater, the movie's namesake villain, while Schwarzenegger is a handsome stranger named, naturally, Handsome Stranger. Look for such noted funny people as Paul Lynde (TV's "Hollywood Squares") and Ruth Buzzi (TV's "Laugh-In") in supporting roles. THE VILLAIN (1979): Also stars Ann-Margret, Paul Lynde, Foster Brooks, Ruth Buzzi, Jack Elam. Executive producer Paul Maslansky. Produced by Mort Engleberg. Written by Robert G. Kane. Directed by Hal Needham.

OSCAR WINNER ANNE BANCROFT'S MANY TALENTS SHINE IN MAY 21 DVD DEBUTS OF AGNES OF GOD AND 84 CHARING CROSS ROAD

Five-time Oscar® nominee and Best Actress winner Anne Bancroft displays her remarkable talents and versatility in AGNES OF GOD and 84 CHARING CROSS ROAD, two acclaimed and very different films making their DVD premieres on May 21 from Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment.

*AGNES OF GOD*

Bancroft was nominated as Best Actress for her role as Mother Superior Miriam Ruth in Norman Jewison's AGNES OF GOD, bringing her a fifth acting nomination; she won Best Actress for her stunning portrayal of teacher Annie Sullivan in 1963's The Miracle Worker. Bancroft's co-star Meg Tilly was also nominated for her role in the film (Best Supporting Actress), as was composer Georges Delerue (Best Original Score).

Based on the controversial Broadway play by John Pielmeyer, who also wrote the film's script, AGNES OF GOD galvanized audiences with its story of a young nun (Tilly) who gives birth to a baby she claims was an immaculate conception. The baby is found dead, resulting in an investigation by secular psychologist Martha Livingston (Jane Fonda) who is immediately at odds with the protective Mother Superior - and who is determined to uncover the truth about the infant's death.

Released in 1985, AGNES OF GOD was written by John Pielmeyer, based on his play; produced by Patrick Palmer and Norman Jewison; and directed by Jewison.

*84 CHARING CROSS ROAD*

In 1986, the high drama of AGNES OF GOD was followed by the sweet romance of 84 CHARING CROSS ROAD, which co-starred Sir Anthony Hopkins. For her portrayal of New York writer Helene Hanff, Bancroft won the BAFTA Award, Britain's equivalent of the Oscar. Hailed by Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide as "loving, literate and totally disarming," 84 CHARING CROSS ROAD explores the 20-year relationship between Hanff and Frank Doel, a London dealer of rare books whose shop address lends the film its title. When Hanff spies an advertisement for Doel's dealership, she places an order, unaware that her letter will begin a friendship and romance that spans two decades.

A 1986 release, 84 CHARING CROSS ROAD was written by Hugh Whitemore, based on the memoirs of Helene Hanff; produced by Geoffrey Helman; and directed by David Jones.

FIRST TIME EVER ON DVD! LEGEND ULTIMATE EDITION FEATURING THE NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN DIRECTOR’S CUT!

On May 21, Universal Studios Home Video will release director Ridley Scott’s masterpiece, LEGEND, in all its stunning, visionary glory, as a dual-disc DVD release. Priced at $24.98 SRP, the LEGEND ULTIMATE EDITION stars Tom Cruise and includes both the never-before-released, 113-minute Director’s Cut — with its extraordinary original soundtrack by Oscar®-winning composer Jerry Goldsmith— and the version that was released theatrically in the United States. LEGEND is also available on VHS (feature only) for $9.98. Order close for both VHS and DVD is April 16.

LEGEND ULTIMATE EDITION DVD is a feast for the eyes, ears and imagination and boasts an impressive array of bonus features, most never available to the public:

A classic fantasy-adventure about the eternal struggle between good and evil, LEGEND features a stellar cast. Box-office idol Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible I and II, Vanilla Sky, Eyes Wide Shut) stars as Jack, a mortal with a pure heart who lives in solitude and harmony with the magical folk and animals of the forest. Mia Sara (Timecop, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) is Lili, a beautiful princess who loves Jack with all her heart. Lending his unique brand of menace and magnetism is Tim Curry (The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Charlie’s Angels) as the Lord of Darkness, who seeks to seduce the princess, kill the last unicorn and plunge the world into eternal night.

Resurrecting a ‘Legend’

Like so many of Ridley Scott’s films, LEGEND has attained the level of cult status enjoyed by only a select group of motion pictures. With the advent of the Internet, it has spun a whole new "web" of enchantment among fans. But along with devotion, there has also been a terrific sense of "what might have been." What these fans want most is to see LEGEND the way Ridley Scott originally envisioned it. "Producer Arnon Milchan says, "If I knew about movies what I know today, I probably would have convinced Ridley to fight for his original cut, which I felt was more true to his vision."

Because the picture was originally produced with two companies being involved, one having the foreign rights, and the other the domestic, there was a decision made to go in two different directions. The result was two radically different versions: a European cut with the Jerry Goldsmith score and a reported running time of 94 minutes and a "less complex" U.S. cut, aimed at a more youthful, rock ‘n’ roll-oriented audience, which ran 89 minutes and replaced the original Goldsmith score with an alternate score by Tangerine Dream.

The initial cut of the film ran over two hours long. In retrospect, Scott himself accepts much of the blame for altering the film, particularly with regard to the score: "I got totally paranoid," he reveals. "I started to hack away at the movie. A gentleman at Universal literally tried to physically stop me. As opposed to him saying, ‘We’ve got to cut this film,’ it was me....I figured that maybe we’d been too adventurous with our expectations of a full-blown fairy story, and therefore, maybe the combination of the score and the visual was actually too sweet. So, with only three weeks to redo a score, I went to Berlin and did the score with Tangerine Dream. In three weeks they did an incredible job, but it was completely different. It was a driving, more modern way to go, and given what they did in the time, I thought they did a fantastic job. On reflection, it was the wrong thing to do, and the first score [by Jerry Goldsmith] was what it should be, which is what we’ve got on this disc."

One of the world’s finest composers, Goldsmith was honored with an Academy Award for his scoring of The Omen. Some of his other masterworks include scores for The Mummy, L.A. Confidential, Malice, Alien, Planet of the Apes, Patton and over a hundred more. And now, at last, one of his finest scores ever will finally be heard on the LEGEND ULTIMATE EDITION.

The Ultimate Fairy Tale

Appropriately, Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Thelma and Louise), the director of LEGEND, has himself achieved no less than legendary status. Prior to LEGEND, his fourth film, Scott had already directed The Duellists, Bladerunner and Alien, each of which is very stylized. Before moving on to what he refers to as "modern" films with normal people in modern, normal situations, he says, "I wanted to get off my chest this notion of a fairy story."

LEGEND was the culmination of almost four years of research and preparation. Early on, Scott contacted novelist William Hjortsberg to discuss the possibility of his writing a screenplay: "I want to do a classic fairy tale, and I want to have unicorns in it — fastest steed on earth — and I want the villain to be called ‘Darkness.’" Together they discussed the basic story elements involving a young hermit who becomes a hero when he battles the evil Lord of Darkness, rescues a beautiful princess and frees the world from an icy winter curse. Scott recalls that Hjortsberg "went away and came back with a first draft which I thought was generally magnificent."

"One of the things that I think is extraordinary about LEGEND," notes Tim Curry (who plays "Darkness"), "is that it’s much closer to Grimm’s Fairy Tales, to the kind of primal, psychological things that disturb children, which fairy tales were clearly intended to address...there’s some really gritty, dark, bad stuff in there, the same way that there is in life. And fairy tales were invented to prepare children for the horrors that they might encounter."

The script was "so beautiful," reflects actress Mia Sara ("Lili"). "Never before nor since have I ever read anything that had that kind of impact on me." But it was almost too good. Editor Terry Rawlings remembers: "The Hjortsberg screenplay I thought was absolutely incredible, but I thought, ‘I don’t know how they’re going to film it because it would be costing a fortune. We had this room with storyboards, so you’d wander the room looking at the script as well as reading it, and you’d think, well, that’s a million dollars, that’s a million, that’s another million..." The final screenplay took three years and 15 script revisions before it was completed. Principal shooting began on March 26th, 1984.

Forest of Enchantment

The centerpiece of LEGEND is its remarkable forest. Ridley Scott had originally intended to shoot on location and scouted out Yosemite as a potential site. But the canopy formed by the immense trees blotted out much of the sunlight. "I would have had to put a scaffolding rig in the trees the size of a football field to light the picture," he says. So, at Pinewood Studios in London, production designer Assheton Gorton set about creating a forest whose beauty would rival any natural work of art.

Gorton's sets, all of which started life as original sketches and models, are among the most elaborate ever built for a motion picture and were constructed on six of Pinewood's huge soundstages. Inside the world's largest soundstage — originally built to house a submarine set for the James Bond picture The Spy Who Loved Me — the vast, mystical forest came to life with giant trees, gnarled and sinister; an undulating mossy floor with hills and dells, meandering wooded paths, delightful forest glades and babbling streams; a sun-gilded amphitheater and a cliff-edged pond with bluebells and blossoms. It took 50 craftsmen 14 weeks to build. For the winter scenes, 1,500 icicles were added. Varying in length from one foot to eight feet, they were made of resin and hot wax to achieve the proper texture. The special effects team, under supervisor Nick Allder, also supplied tons of artificial snow in the process of "winterizing" the forest set.

The forest was but one of several major sets designed by Gorton. Another is the gigantic kitchen at the bottom of the Dark Lord's subterranean castle. Constructed on a mammoth scale and populated with giant demon cooks, it appears even bigger against the tiny bodies of elves, pixies and leprechauns who appear throughout the film. The castle's great hall is another spectacular set, which includes the huge and menacing Throne of Darkness. Among its other features: ominous jet-black columns, 25 feet high and nine feet in diameter; a gigantic black marble banquet table, and a massive fireplace adorned with fantastic sculptures.

Synopsis

There can be no good without evil...
No love without hate...
No heaven without hell...
No light without darkness.

Once, long ago, before there was such a thing as time, the world was shrouded in darkness. Then came the splendor of light, bringing life and love into the Universe, and the Lord of Darkness retreated deep into the shadows of the earth, plotting his return to power...by banishing light forever.

In this classic fantasy/adventure, pure good and foulest evil will soon battle to the death. Set amid a timeless mythical forest inhabited by fairies, goblins and other magical folk is the story of Jack, a forest dweller who lives in solitude and harmony with the animals of the wood...including Unicorns, who are key to keeping light alive and evil at bay. Chosen by fate to undertake a heroic quest, Jack must brave a host of terrors to not only save his true love — a beautiful princess named Lili — from the clutches of the demonic Lord of Darkness, but also rescue a captive unicorn...or the world will be plunged into a never-ending ice age where the dawn never comes and evil reigns supreme.

"REQUIEM FOR A HEAVYWEIGHT" DEBUTS ON DVD ON MAY 14

Acclaimed Boxing Drama Stars Anthony Quinn, Jackie Gleason, Mickey Rooney, Julie Harris and a Cameo Appearance by Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali)

"Requiem for a Heavyweight," the classic drama about a boxer faced with corruption and greed, makes its first-ever appearance on DVD on May 14 in a newly remastered release from Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment.      From writer Rod Serling and director Ralph Nelson, the 1962 film features a heavyweight cast of renowned actors. Among them are Anthony Quinn ("Zorba the Greek"), Jackie Gleason ("The Hustler"), Mickey Rooney ("Breakfast at Tiffany's"), Julie Harris ("The Haunting") and, in a small role as himself, a young boxer named Cassius Clay, who would later go on to global fame as Muhammad Ali. The title "heavyweight" is Mountain Rivera, played by Quinn, a physically and mentally washed-up boxer who is undone by a knockout punch delivered by Clay. Facing a bleak future outside the ring, he turns to his unscrupulous manager, Maish Resnick (Gleason), for help - not suspecting that Resnick is desperate for cash himself and willing to sell out his once-star fighter to the seedy world of fake wrestling.

"REQUIEM FOR A HEAVYWEIGHT" was originally created in 1957 as an episode of the classic "Playhouse 90" TV anthology series. When the televised, live production met with remarkable critical acclaim, Serling and director Nelson brought the story to the big screen with the help of producer David Susskind and Columbia Pictures. The resulting film version is considered one of cinema's great sports films. The Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment DVD release of "REQUIEM FOR A HEAVYWEIGHT" has been remastered in high definition and offers both widescreen and full-screen presentations. Also starring Nancy Kushman, Madame Spivey. Written by Rod Serling. Produced by David Susskind. Directed by Ralph Nelson.
