Michelle Pfeiffer, And Introducing Screen Actors Guild Supporting Actress
Nominee Dakota Fanning
New Line Home Entertainment today announced the VHS and Platinum SeriesÔ DVD release of the compelling drama I AM SAM. Starring Best Actor Academy AwardÒ nominee Sean Penn, I AM SAM is the story of a mentally-challenged father who fights the justice system to retain custody of his daughter. Penn, Michelle Pfeiffer and newcomer Dakota Fanning star in this powerful, emotional film about love, parenthood and the bonds of family. I AM SAM will be available for rental on VHS and Platinum Series DVD, and for sale on Platinum Series DVD for $24.98, on June 18.
Raising a child is never easy, and like everybody else, Sam Dawson (Penn) has learned to adapt. But when Lucy (Fanning) turns seven, social workers step in. Sam is mentally-challenged, and it will be up to the courts to evaluate his ability to continue to raise Lucy. Sam, encouraged by his friends, seeks a lawyer to represent him. Rita Harrison (Pfeiffer) initially resists taking on such a long-shot case, but ultimately takes the challenge in order to prove to her co-workers that she will work a pro bono case. Together, Sam and Rita struggle to convince the system that Sam deserves to get his daughter back and, in the process, fuse a bond that results in a unique testament to the power of unconditional love.
The Platinum Series DVD includes commentary by I AM SAM director and co-screenwriter Jessie Nelson, deleted and alternate scenes with optional director commentary, the theatrical trailer and the theatrical press kit. There is also an original documentary titled "Becoming Sam," which looks at the genesis of the project, from the inspiration, casting and creation of the characters through filming and creation of the soundtrack. The film’s DVD also features a widescreen version of the movie, 5.1 surround sound, stereo surround sound, DTS surround sound, English subtitles, closed captions and animated menus. Rounding out the cast as Sam’s loyal group of friends are Doug Hutchinson (The Green Mile), Stanley DeSantis (The Man Who Wasn’t There), Brad Allan Silverman and Joseph Rosenberg.

DISNEY STRIKES AGAIN-- THE MUPPETS GO PAN AND SCAN
In some rather disappointing news, it seems that Walt Disney Home Video has extended its policy of full screen only DVD releases to MUPPET TREASURE ISLAND and MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL. These full screen only announcements come in addition to those of SNOW DOGS and MAX KEEBLE'S BIG MOVE, making family oriented programming the obvious target for Disney’s new and unwelcome DVD policy. If you would like to see 16:9 enhanced wide screen versions of MUPPET TREASURE ISLAND and MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL, I strongly recommend that you contact Disney by telephone and e-mail and tell them that you will NOT be purchasing any full screen only releases. Be polite, but also make sure that you cite MUPPET TREASURE ISLAND and MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL by name. Contact Walt Disney Home Video at the following telephone number: 1-800-72-DISNEY and e-mail: disneyinfo@disneyhelp.com.
A Muppet Wide Screen petition has also been set up at the following: http://www.petitiononline.com/muppetws/petition.html
Remember: DON’T ACCEPT COMPROMISES… DEMAND ORIGINAL ASPECT RATIOS ON DVD! Take the time to let your feelings be known to Walt Disney Home Video by calling and e-mailing the company.

DIRECTOR: ANTONIO BIDO
Antonio Bido (aka Anthony Bido) directed this well-crafted Italian giallo thriller, which borrows from the masters of the genre – Mario Bava and Dario Argento. The story concerns a young nightclub dancer (Sylvia Kramer/Paola Tedesco) who witnesses a murder and the efforts of her lover (Richard Stewart/Corrado Pani) to track down the killer before he can get to her. With this film, Bido created a work that was both stylish and well plotted. Replete with the haunting atmosphere and gruesome deaths one expects from this genre, and with a bonus of some outstanding music.

KISS OF THE TARANTULA
ERIC MASON, SUZANNE LING, HERMAN WALLNER, PATRICIA LANDON, BEVERLY EDDINS, JAY SCOTT, REBECCA EDDINS, WILLIAM GUHL. DIRECTOR: CHRIS MUNGER
John Bradley operates and lives in a mortuary along with his wife, Martha, and daughter, Susan, who collects tarantula spiders and has always been ostracized by her friends because… well she’s a little bit strange. In true schlocky b-movie horror fashion, this is a real All-American dysfunctional family. When Susan discovers that mommy dearest is plotting to have dear old dad killed by her secret lover, who is also dad’s brother, she places a tarantula in mommy’s bed while she sleeps. Abruptly awakened by the spider, mom dies of a heart attack. This bizarre little episode apparently puts sweet little Susan over the top. Later as a teenager, Susan uses her pet tarantulas in acts of revenge against her terrified classmates, who have been tormenting her for way too long. And innocent looking Susan doesn’t stop there, making good plot use of her father’s mortuary and her creepy little playmates! A 70’s drive-in classic!

- DVD DOUBLE-FEATURE #1WILLIAM "WILD BILL" ELLIOT, ROBERT BLAKE, ALICE FLEMING, PEGGY STEWART, FRANCIS McDONALD, LINDA STIRLING, GLENN STRANGE, DUNCAN RENALDO DIRECTOR: LESLIE SELANDER & HOWARD P. BRETHERTON
Originally produced by Republic Pictures, the Red Ryder movies were based on the character created by Fred Harman for his newspaper comic strip, which ran from 1938 to 1964. There’s plenty of doublebarreled action in this double-feature starring Wild Bill Elliott as the Red Ryder and Bobby Blake as Little Beaver. In the first part of our double-bill, SAN ANTONIO KID (1944), greedy outlaws in pursuit of the coveted "black gold", frighten local ranchers into leaving their homesteads in order that they might buy up all the valuable land. Red Ryder comes to their aid. In the second half of the double-bill, CHEYENNE WILDCAT (1947), Red Ryder is the unwilling object-of-desire caught between the love of two different ladies, but he still finds the time to outwit a gang of ornery outlaws.

Of all the heroes of the Old West, few are as well loved or as easily recognized as the Cisco Kid, based on O’Henry’s famous character. Together with his bumbling, but lovable amigo, Pancho, Cisco has entertained millions of children and adults for many years. This rough-in-tumble double-feature stars Duncan Renaldo as our dashing hero with Martin Garralaga and Leo Carrillo taking turns playing the ever-befuddled Pancho. In "SOUTH OF THE RIO GRANDE" (1945), the daring duo go to the aid of a rancher friend and his neighbors, whose ranches are being terrorized by a ruthless dictator and a gang of horse thieves. In the second part of our double-bill, "THE GIRL FROM SAN LORENZO" (1950), Cisco and Pancho must track down a criminal gang which has been robbing stagecoaches – disguised as Cisco and Pancho!

THE WORST HAS HAPPENED- MAJOR STUDIOS BEGIN ISSUING FULL SCREEN ONLY VERSIONS OF WIDE SCREEN MOVIES
It seems as though the phenomenal success of the DVD format has come back to bite movie buffs in the a**. With DVD now finding its way to the masses, those individuals who can’t live with every single bit of their TV screen filled have been complaining to the mass merchants, who in turn have been putting pressure on the home video companies to release movies in full screen on DVD.
While I have no problems with full screen versions of movies being offered on DVD to supplement wide screen presentations. Full screen only releases are not to be tolerated and signal that the home video companies could be abandoning the early adopters- the group who made DVD a success to begin with. As for the individuals complaining about black bars now, I can only image how loud they will be shouting when they get a wide screen television and discover their full screen DVDs offer them black bars on the sides of the image.
Back to the heart of the matter, Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment and Walt Disney Home Video are the two companies that are now issuing the most noticeable full screen only releases. With regards to Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment, a number of second tier titles such as RACE THE SUN, TO GILLIAN ON HER 37TH BIRTHDAY and 84 CHARING CROSS ROAD are being issued as full screen only. Walt Disney Home Video has taken the same approach with family oriented titles such as SNOW DOGS and MAX KEEBLE'S BIG MOVE. Even Warner Home Video had planned on full screen only versions of such family fare as WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY and CATS & DOGS until a huge public outcry changed Warner’s mind and brought about separate 16:9 enhanced wide screen releases of both films.
If you are amongst the many DVD fans upset or outraged by the notion of full screen only releases, I say- DON’T ACCEPT COMPROMISES… DEMAND ORIGINAL ASPECT RATIOS ON DVD! Take the time to let your feelings be known and contact the following companies:

KEVIN SMITH TALKS WITH STAN LEE IN STAN LEE’S MUTANTS, MONSTERS & MARVELS ON DVD MAY 14
Legendary Comic Book Creator of SPIDER-MAN Shares the Secrets of His Incredible Career and Stories About How He Created Indelible Characters
Stan Lee, who defined comic books as a popular art form for millions of readers, offers an exclusive glimpse into his career when he joins director Kevin Smith for STAN LEE’S MUTANTS, MONSTERS & MARVELS, premiering May 14 only on DVD and videocassette from Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment. Lee, the creator of Spider-Man and The X-Men, and Smith, popular director of "Clerks and Dogma," guide viewers on a journey through Lee's history in this exclusive home-entertainment release, produced by Creative Light Entertainment. It's a one-of-a-kind oral history - a lively conversation between two mutual admirers.
STAN LEE’S MUTANTS, MONSTERS & MARVELS explores the history of comic books during what is now called the "Silver Age," a time when Stan Lee - as a writer, editorial director and, later, publisher of Marvel Comics - co-created an astonishing number of the most legendary characters in comics.
With SPIDER-MAN set for a theatrical release by Columbia Pictures on May 3, an "X-Men" sequel in production, and both "Daredevil" (with Ben Affleck) and "The Incredible Hulk" (directed by Ang Lee) slated for release in 2003, Lee's work has never been more popular or
more faithfully adapted.
In STAN LEE’S MUTANTS, MONSTERS & MARVELS, Smith acts as a wise and witty surrogate for the legion of fans who have followed Lee's career since his beginnings as a 17-year-old writer at Timely Comics, the predecessor to Marvel. With remarkable detail and good humor, Lee divulges his storied past in two separate features on the DVD: "Creating Spider-Man" and "Here Come the Heroes."
In "Creating Spider-Man," Lee gives a definitive set of answers to Smith's questions about Spider-Man, who may be Lee's most famous creation. With complete candor, Lee discusses the creator-credit controversy between him and artist Steve Ditko; Peter Parker's role as a new kind of hero - a kid with real problems to whom readers could relate; Spidey's arch-villains and true loves; and Columbia Pictures' hotly anticipated SPIDER-MAN movie.
In the program's second feature, "Here Come the Heroes," Lee traces his own personal history and the beginnings of his 60-plus years in the business.
The DVD version of STAN LEE’S MUTANTS, MONSTERS & MARVELS is loaded with extras. In addition to cast and crew biographies and a behind-the-scenes featurette, the disc includes an exclusive interview with Lee's wife, Joan; rare home movies from Lee's personal archives; details about the never-released "Fantastic Four" movie; an original poem, "God Woke," read by Lee; and many surprises for avid DVD fans. Also included is a one-of-a-kind tour of Lee's magnificent Hollywood home, in which Lee points out some of the Spider-Man memorabilia he has accumulated through the years.
STAN LEE’S MUTANTS, MONSTERS & MARVELS represents a labor of love for its director and executive producer, Scott Zakarin, CEO of Creative Light Entertainment. "Stan Lee's stories influenced an entire generation of filmmakers, including me," Zakarin says. "Stan has a way of making the most complex characters and conflicts accessible to all audiences. I consider it an honor and a privilege to present the insights and personality of this incredible talent to fans."
Smith agrees that it is time to give Lee his due. "Especially now, in what looks like it's shaping up to be the year of Spider-Man, it's great that we kind of take a moment to pay homage to the guy without whom there is no Spider-Man," Smith says.

UNEXPECTED MYSTERIES AND SURPRISES FILL A GROUNDBREAKING TWO-DISC SET OF MEMENTO THAT PROMISES PUZZLES AND ENIGMAS EXTENDING BEYOND CHRISTOPHER NOLAN'S REVOLUTIONARY FILM
MEMENTO, the intricately designed, double-Oscar-nominated cinematic mystery, will be released May 21 by Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment in a highly anticipated, two-disc limited-edition DVD designed by writer-director Christopher Nolan.
For viewers, the surprises and mysteries only begin with the critically lauded box-office hit, which was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award and was the winner of four Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Picture. In fact, the limited-edition DVD offers a series of mindbenders and challenges designed by Nolan that begin the moment one of the set's two discs is inserted into the player. At its core, the DVD is constructed as an elaborate mental puzzle that the viewer must solve in order to watch the film and the added-value elements.
"I've enjoyed flexing my creative muscles to come up with something completely new and unique to the DVD format," said writer/director Christopher Nolan. "I hope fans of MEMENTO will enjoy not only the film, but also the extra features and challenges that the DVD offers."
The MEMENTO limited-edition DVD features the most extensive, full-length director's commentary since the film's theatrical release. One disc is devoted to the film itself, which has been digitally remastered and promises the best-ever viewing experience of MEMENTO. It also includes a surprise-filled commentary by Christopher Nolan. The second disc offers a wealth of special features that includes the 23-minute documentary "Anatomy of a Scene." Originally shown on The Sundance Channel, it breaks down a single scene from script to design to photography to its final screen version. Also included on the limited-edition DVD is the original short story by Jonathan Nolan, as well as a a "director's script" that allows viewers to dissect the film's unique structure by switching between a scene and Nolan's annotated film script by using a DVD player's angle-change feature. The newly designed limited edition of MEMENTO will be housed in some of the most unique and creative packaging ever produced, and within it viewers will find hidden assistance to solving the puzzles of the DVD.
