New Line Home Entertainment today announced the VHS and Platinum SeriesÔ DVD release of the compelling drama I AM SAM. Starring Best Actor Academy AwardÒ nominee Sean Penn, I AM SAM is the story of a mentally-challenged father who fights the justice system to retain custody of his daughter. Together, Sam and Rita struggle to convince the system that Sam deserves to get his daughter back and, in the process, fuse a bond that results in a unique testament to the power of unconditional love.

The Platinum Series DVD includes commentary by I AM SAM director and co-screenwriter Jessie Nelson, deleted and alternate scenes with optional director commentary, the theatrical trailer and the theatrical press kit. DISNEY STRIKES AGAIN-- THE MUPPETS GO PAN AND SCAN

In some rather disappointing news, it seems that Walt Disney Home Video has extended its policy of full screen only DVD releases to MUPPET TREASURE ISLAND and MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL. These full screen only announcements come in addition to those of SNOW DOGS and MAX KEEBLE'S BIG MOVE, making family oriented programming the obvious target for Disney’s new and unwelcome DVD policy. If you would like to see 16:9 enhanced wide screen versions of MUPPET TREASURE ISLAND and MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL, I strongly recommend that you contact Disney by telephone and e-mail and tell them that you will NOT be purchasing any full screen only releases. Be polite, but also make sure that you cite MUPPET TREASURE ISLAND and MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL by name. Contact Walt Disney Home Video at the following telephone number: 1-800-72-DISNEY and e-mail: disneyinfo@disneyhelp.com.

A Muppet Wide Screen petition has also been set up at the following: http://www.petitiononline.com/muppetws/petition.html

Remember: DON’T ACCEPT COMPROMISES… DEMAND ORIGINAL ASPECT RATIOS ON DVD! Take the time to let your feelings be known to Walt Disney Home Video by calling and e-mailing the company.

RICHARD STEWART, SYLVIA KRAMER, FRANCO CITTI, FERNANDO CERULLI, GIUSEPPE ADDOBBATI, GIANFRANCO BULLO, JILL PRATT, BIANCA TOCCAFONDI.

DIRECTOR: ANTONIO BIDO

Antonio Bido (aka Anthony Bido) directed this well-crafted Italian giallo thriller, which borrows from the masters of the genre – Mario Bava and Dario Argento. The story concerns a young nightclub dancer (Sylvia Kramer/Paola Tedesco) who witnesses a murder and the efforts of her lover (Richard Stewart/Corrado Pani) to track down the killer before he can get to her. With this film, Bido created a work that was both stylish and well plotted. Replete with the haunting atmosphere and gruesome deaths one expects from this genre, and with a bonus of some outstanding music.

KISS OF THE TARANTULA

ERIC MASON, SUZANNE LING, HERMAN WALLNER, PATRICIA LANDON, BEVERLY EDDINS, JAY SCOTT, REBECCA EDDINS, WILLIAM GUHL. DIRECTOR: CHRIS MUNGER

John Bradley operates and lives in a mortuary along with his wife, Martha, and daughter, Susan, who collects tarantula spiders and has always been ostracized by her friends because… well she’s a little bit strange. In true schlocky b-movie horror fashion, this is a real All-American dysfunctional family. When Susan discovers that mommy dearest is plotting to have dear old dad killed by her secret lover, who is also dad’s brother, she places a tarantula in mommy’s bed while she sleeps. Abruptly awakened by the spider, mom dies of a heart attack. This bizarre little episode apparently puts sweet little Susan over the top. Later as a teenager, Susan uses her pet tarantulas in acts of revenge against her terrified classmates, who have been tormenting her for way too long. And innocent looking Susan doesn’t stop there, making good plot use of her father’s mortuary and her creepy little playmates! A 70’s drive-in classic!

RED RYDER - DVD DOUBLE-FEATURE #1

WILLIAM "WILD BILL" ELLIOT, ROBERT BLAKE, ALICE FLEMING, PEGGY STEWART, FRANCIS McDONALD, LINDA STIRLING, GLENN STRANGE, DUNCAN RENALDO DIRECTOR: LESLIE SELANDER & HOWARD P. BRETHERTON

Originally produced by Republic Pictures, the Red Ryder movies were based on the character created by Fred Harman for his newspaper comic strip, which ran from 1938 to 1964. There’s plenty of doublebarreled action in this double-feature starring Wild Bill Elliott as the Red Ryder and Bobby Blake as Little Beaver. In the first part of our double-bill, SAN ANTONIO KID (1944), greedy outlaws in pursuit of the coveted "black gold", frighten local ranchers into leaving their homesteads in order that they might buy up all the valuable land. Red Ryder comes to their aid. In the second half of the double-bill, CHEYENNE WILDCAT (1947), Red Ryder is the unwilling object-of-desire caught between the love of two different ladies, but he still finds the time to outwit a gang of ornery outlaws.

CISCO KID - DVD DOUBLE-FEATURE #1

DUNCAN RENALDO, MARTIN GARRALAGA, FRANCIS MCDONALD, LEO CARRILLO, JANE ADAMS. DIRECTOR: LAMBERT HILLYER & DERWIN ABRAHAMS

Of all the heroes of the Old West, few are as well loved or as easily recognized as the Cisco Kid, based on O’Henry’s famous character. Together with his bumbling, but lovable amigo, Pancho, Cisco has entertained millions of children and adults for many years. This rough-in-tumble double-feature stars Duncan Renaldo as our dashing hero with Martin Garralaga and Leo Carrillo taking turns playing the ever-befuddled Pancho. In "SOUTH OF THE RIO GRANDE" (1945), the daring duo go to the aid of a rancher friend and his neighbors, whose ranches are being terrorized by a ruthless dictator and a gang of horse thieves. In the second part of our double-bill, "THE GIRL FROM SAN LORENZO" (1950), Cisco and Pancho must track down a criminal gang which has been robbing stagecoaches – disguised as Cisco and Pancho!

DIRECTOR GUILLERMO DEL TORO'S CHILLING THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE ARRIVES ON DVD JUNE 25

BUY THIS DVD AT AMAZON.COMCreator of 'Blade 2,' 'Cronos' and 'Mimic' Delivers Supernatural Frights and Suspense

THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE, a startling and stylish supernatural thriller from Guillermo del Toro, the director of "Blade 2" and "Mimic," debuts on DVD June 25 from Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment.

Recalling the lush, atmospheric chills of "The Others" and "The Sixth Sense," THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE is a ghost story that teams Mexico's most well-known filmmaker, del Toro, with Agustín and Pedro Almodóvar ("Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown," "All About My Mother"), two of Spain's most noted cinematic talents.

Nominated for two Goya Awards, the Spanish equivalent of the Oscar, THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE has been hailed as "an elegant scare picture" by The New York Times and "the most complete and complex genre movie of the year" by the New York Press.

Set at an isolated orphanage and political shelter in Santa Lucia, Spain, THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE centers on 12-year-old Carlos (Fernando Tielve), who arrives at Santa Lucia School as an orphan of the Spanish Civil War. Carlos soon learns that the imposing stone building houses more than just children and political refugees. Hidden riches, sexual intrigue and the restless ghost of a murdered student are waiting in the darkness.

THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE was produced by El Deseo S.A., a film-production group formed by the Almodóvars to produce Pedro Almodóvar's films with complete creative freedom. The company has produced all of Almodóvar's films since Law of Desire, including such internationally successful films as "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown," "High Heels" and "Live Flesh." El Deseo aims to be a breeding ground for new talent and has produced the first films of several young Spanish directors, such as Accion Mutante by Alex de la Iglesia and Pasajes by Daniel Calparsoro.

THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE: Starring Marisa Paredes, Eduardo Noriega, Federico Luppi and Fernando Tielve. Executive Producers Agustín Almodóvar and Berta Navarro. Written by Guillermo del Toro, Antonio Trashorras and David Muñoz. Directed by Guillermo del Toro.

SNAKE IN THE EAGLE’S SHADOW, a kung fu classic starring internationally acclaimed Hong Kong's action-comedy legend Jackie Chan (Rush Hour, Shanghai Noon), debuts on videocassette and DVD June 18.  This star-making film was the first to feature Jackie Chan's trademark mix of mind-blowing martial arts action with hilariously choreographed slapstick.

SNAKE IN THE EAGLE’S SHADOW was also one of the first collaborations between Jackie Chan and director/master of action choreographer Yuen Woo Ping (Iron Monkey, action choreographer for The Matrix and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon).

SNAKE IN THE EAGLE’S SHADOW, is set at the end of the China Dynasty when a 200-year-old deadly clan known as the Eagle Claw Society has eliminated all styles of martial arts except for the revered "Snake Fist" style. THE WORST HAS HAPPENED- MAJOR STUDIOS BEGIN ISSUING FULL SCREEN ONLY VERSIONS OF WIDE SCREEN MOVIES

It seems as though the phenomenal success of the DVD format has come back to bite movie buffs in the a**. With DVD now finding its way to the masses, those individuals who can’t live with every single bit of their TV screen filled have been complaining to the mass merchants, who in turn have been putting pressure on the home video companies to release movies in full screen on DVD.

While I have no problems with full screen versions of movies being offered on DVD to supplement wide screen presentations. Full screen only releases are not to be tolerated and signal that the home video companies could be abandoning the early adopters- the group who made DVD a success to begin with. As for the individuals complaining about black bars now, I can only image how loud they will be shouting when they get a wide screen television and discover their full screen DVDs offer them black bars on the sides of the image.

Back to the heart of the matter, Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment and Walt Disney Home Video are the two companies that are now issuing the most noticeable full screen only releases. With regards to Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment, a number of second tier titles such as RACE THE SUN, TO GILLIAN ON HER 37TH BIRTHDAY and 84 CHARING CROSS ROAD are being issued as full screen only. Walt Disney Home Video has taken the same approach with family oriented titles such as SNOW DOGS and MAX KEEBLE'S BIG MOVE. Even Warner Home Video had planned on full screen only versions of such family fare as WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY and CATS & DOGS until a huge public outcry changed Warner’s mind and brought about separate 16:9 enhanced wide screen releases of both films.

If you are amongst the many DVD fans upset or outraged by the notion of full screen only releases, I say- DON’T ACCEPT COMPROMISES… DEMAND ORIGINAL ASPECT RATIOS ON DVD! Take the time to let your feelings be known and contact the following companies:

KEVIN SMITH TALKS WITH STAN LEE IN STAN LEE’S MUTANTS, MONSTERS & MARVELS ON DVD MAY 14

Legendary Comic Book Creator of SPIDER-MAN Shares the Secrets of His Incredible Career and Stories About How He Created Indelible Characters

Stan Lee, who defined comic books as a popular art form for millions of readers, offers an exclusive glimpse into his career when he joins director Kevin Smith for STAN LEE’S MUTANTS, MONSTERS & MARVELS, premiering May 14 only on DVD and videocassette from Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment. Lee, the creator of Spider-Man and The X-Men, and Smith, popular director of "Clerks and Dogma," guide viewers on a journey through Lee's history in this exclusive home-entertainment release, produced by Creative Light Entertainment. It's a one-of-a-kind oral history - a lively conversation between two mutual admirers.

STAN LEE’S MUTANTS, MONSTERS & MARVELS explores the history of comic books during what is now called the "Silver Age," a time when Stan Lee - as a writer, editorial director and, later, publisher of Marvel Comics - co-created an astonishing number of the most legendary characters in comics.

With SPIDER-MAN set for a theatrical release by Columbia Pictures on May 3, an "X-Men" sequel in production, and both "Daredevil" (with Ben Affleck) and "The Incredible Hulk" (directed by Ang Lee) slated for release in 2003, Lee's work has never been more popular or

more faithfully adapted.

In STAN LEE’S MUTANTS, MONSTERS & MARVELS, Smith acts as a wise and witty surrogate for the legion of fans who have followed Lee's career since his beginnings as a 17-year-old writer at Timely Comics, the predecessor to Marvel. With remarkable detail and good humor, Lee divulges his storied past in two separate features on the DVD: "Creating Spider-Man" and "Here Come the Heroes."

In "Creating Spider-Man," Lee gives a definitive set of answers to Smith's questions about Spider-Man, who may be Lee's most famous creation. With complete candor, Lee discusses the creator-credit controversy between him and artist Steve Ditko; Peter Parker's role as a new kind of  hero - a kid with real problems to whom readers could relate; Spidey's arch-villains and true loves; and Columbia Pictures' hotly anticipated SPIDER-MAN movie.

In the program's second feature, "Here Come the Heroes," Lee traces his own personal history and the beginnings of his 60-plus years in the business.

The DVD version of STAN LEE’S MUTANTS, MONSTERS & MARVELS is loaded with extras. In addition to cast and crew biographies and a behind-the-scenes featurette, the disc includes an exclusive interview with Lee's wife, Joan; rare home movies from Lee's personal archives; details about the never-released "Fantastic Four" movie; an original poem, "God Woke," read by Lee; and many surprises for avid DVD fans. Also included is a one-of-a-kind tour of Lee's magnificent Hollywood home, in which Lee points out some of the Spider-Man memorabilia he has accumulated through the years.

STAN LEE’S MUTANTS, MONSTERS & MARVELS represents a labor of love for its director and executive producer, Scott Zakarin, CEO of Creative Light Entertainment. "Stan Lee's stories influenced an entire generation of filmmakers, including me," Zakarin says. "Stan has a way of making the most complex characters and conflicts accessible to all audiences. I consider it an honor and a privilege to present the insights and personality of this incredible talent to fans."

Smith agrees that it is time to give Lee his due. "Especially now, in what looks like it's shaping up to be the year of Spider-Man, it's great that we kind of take a moment to pay homage to the guy without whom there is no Spider-Man," Smith says.

LATEST ENTRY IN STAN WINSTON'S "CREATURE FEATURES" SERIES, HOW TO MAKE A MONSTER, COMES TO DVD JUNE 11

Update of Classic Thriller Boasts Talented Young Cast, Including Steven Culp, Clea Duvall, Julie Strain and Jason Marsden

Stan Winston, Academy Award-winning master creator of special makeup effects, and Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment bring the classic "monster movie" to a new generation with HOW TO MAKE A MONSTER, arriving on DVD and videocassette on June 11.

HOW TO MAKE A MONSTER takes the horror genre that rocketed to popularity in the 1950s and updates it for the 21st century as reality and fantasy collide head-on in the adolescent world of computer-game creation.

The cyber-thriller boasts mind-blowing monster effects by Winston (Jurassic Park III, A. I.  Artificial Intelligence) and director George Huang (Swimming with Sharks). The tongue-in- cheek chiller stars a roster of young, up-and-coming Hollywood talent, including Steven Culp (13 Days), Clea Duvall (Girl, Interrupted), Julie Strain (Heavy Metal 2000), Tyler Mane (X- Men), Jason Marsden (White Squall) and Karim Prince (Tomorrow by Midnight).

In HOW TO MAKE A MONSTER, the secret laboratories and white coats of 1950s horror movies give way to the computer screens and software labs of Clayton Software, which enlists the talents of a misfit group of programmers to develop the scariest computer combat game ever made, "Evilution."

With four weeks to bring the game to market and a million-dollar bonus on the line, the programmers utilize a telemetry suit to render a 3-D version of the onscreen villain. But when a power surge gives the hard drive a mind of its own, the suit comes to life and begins playing the game for real - and the programming team finds itself in the middle of a chilling virtual nightmare beyond its wildest imagination.

HOW TO MAKE A MONSTER: Executive Producers Samuel Z. Arkoff, Robyn Rosenfeld, Buddy Epstein. Produced by Lou Arkoff, Stan Winston, Colleen Camp. Written and Directed by George Huang.

MONSTER’S BALL is a hard-hitting Southern drama tempered by the redemptive story of a life-changing love. It is the story of Hank (Billy Bob Thornton), an embittered prison guard working on Death Row who begins an unlikely, but emotionally charged affair with Leticia (Halle Berry), the wife of a man under his watch on The Row.  MONSTER’S BALL also features Heath Ledger and Peter Boyle. Boyle plays Hank's bigoted, aging father, whose hatred seems to have poisoned his entire family as much as the family business, which is working on the prison Death Squad. Ledger plays Hank's son, who is hell-bent on getting out.

ZATOICHI--The Blindswordsman Series

Features:

EPISODE 1: Zatoichi Monogatari (The Life And Opinion of Masseur Ichi) (1962) b&w, 96 min.

The first of the legendary Zatoichi movies introduces Shintaro Katsu in the role that immortalized him, as the blind masseur/swordsman. While trying to practice his trade as a masseur in the tiny province of Shimosa, he finds the land overrun by rivaloutlaw gangs contending for power. Sukejoro, one of the gang leaders, knows of Ichi's reputation with a sword and tries unsuccessfully to hire him -- his rival, Shigezo, hires a warrior with an equally daunting reputation to go up against the unwilling hero.

EPISODE 2: Zoku Zatoichi Monogatari (The Return Of Masseur Ichi) (1962) b&w, 72 min.

Trying to resume his peaceful life, Ichi is engaged as a masseur by a feudal lord, but discovers that the man is deranged. He hopes to make a quick, peaceful exit, but finds himself pursued by samurai who know that if their lord's mental condition were exposed, he would be forced to commit suicide and his holdings broken up, and their clan destroyed. The blind swordsman fends off their attempts to kill him, but ultimately faces a deadly one-armed samurai (played by Tomisaburo Wakayama, the brother of star Shintaro Katsu) in a final duel.

EPISODE 3: Shin Zatoichi Monogatari (Masseur Ichi Enters Again) (1963) color, 91 min.

The third film in the "Blind Swordsman" series (and the first in color)delves further into the background of the hero. Zatoichi (Shintaro Katsu) returns to his home village and meets Yajuro Banno, the teacher  who trained him as a swordsman, and the man's sister, who is immediately attracted to him. She offers herself in marriage to an astonished Ichi, who is unable to accept the proposal because of the enemies that he has made and the danger this would mean to any woman who became his wife. He is almost as surprised by his mentor's vociferous objections to the proposed marriage, however, and discovers that Banno has put his skills with a sword in service to a gang of kidnappers who are prepared to kill Ichi or anyone else that gets in their way.

EPISODE 4: Zatoichi Kyo Jyo Tabi (Masseur Ichi, The Fugitive) (1963), color, 86 min.

Zatoichi's sense of righteousness is nearly his undoing in this complex and savage tale of revenge. The blind masseur and swordsman arrives in the village of Shimonita and discovers that a local gang leader has placed a bounty on him -- he is attacked by a ronin whose swordmanship is superior to his own, and nearly killed, surviving only because the other man spares his life. When the assassin kills a defenseless woman, however, Ichi's outrage causes him to attack the gang leader's stronghold, laying into his men by the score to face his opponent in what seems like certain suicide. With the gang, including the leader who started the conflict slaughtered, the final duel becomes a contest between Ichi's unbridled rage and his opponent's  extreme confidence, to see which will drive either to make a mistake.

EPISODE 5: Zatoichi Kenka-Tabi (Zatoichi On The Road) (1963), color, 87 min.

Zatoichi, the blind masseur and swordsman, is invited to the village of Doyama by Hikoso, the leader of a local gang, who wants to employ him as a bodyguard. While traveling to Doyama, Ichi and a companion are attacked by three men working for rival gang leader Tobei, and his companion is killed. Ichi's attempts to negotiate his way safely between the two gangs is complicated by his meeting with a dying man who extracts a promise from the swordsman to help Omitsu, a runaway servant who has fled the estate of a feudal lord, after the man tried to rape her. He must return Omitsu to her family, even as the lord's agents pursue her and members of both gangs come after him.
