The Definitive Must-Have DVD Box Set Of The Year With Never-Before-Seen Bonus Features From All Three Films Arrives December 17, 2002

It's a blast from the past, present and future this holiday season as Universal Studios Home Video releases the BACK TO THE FUTURE TRILOGY on DVD for the very first time on December 17, 2002 for $39.95 MAP. An absolute must-have for any collection, the three-disc boxed set contains BACK TO THE FUTURE, BACK TO THE FUTURE II and BACK TO THE FUTURE III with newly re-mastered audio soundtracks and is fully loaded with an array of never-before-seen bonus features befitting the prestige of its DVD debut, the BACK TO THE FUTURE TRILOGY features exclusive new interviews conducted this year with actor Michael J. Fox, director Robert Zemeckis, screenwriter Bob Gale and producer Neil Canton, as well as newly discovered deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes footage, a featurette on the making of the films with interviews of the cast and crew, a live audio commentary session conducted at the USC Film School, a Michael J. Fox Parkinson’s Disease Foundation PSA, and other bonus materials associated with each of the three films.

One of the most successful cinematic franchises created, with over $418 million in combined domestic boxoffice grosses, the BACK TO THE FUTURE films -- all executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy, produced by Neil Canton, directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by Bob Gale -- broke the mold of traditional adventure-comedy films and left an indelible mark on popular culture that still resonates among a huge fan base. The spectacular success of the original 1985 BACK TO THE FUTURE, which won the Academy Award for Best Sound Effects Editing and was also nominated for Best Original Screenplay, Best Sound and Best Song ("Power of Love"), catapulted the film careers of Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, and Lea Thompson.

The impact of the first film inevitably led to the futuristic 1989 BACK TO THE FUTURE II, featuring early roles in the then-budding careers of actors Elizabeth Shue, Billy Zane, Jason Scott Lee, and Elijah Wood; and the 1990 BACK TO THE FUTURE III, featuring Oscar-winning actress Mary Steenburgen and set in the Old West with an innovative mixture of sci-fi, western and romantic elements added to the familiar comedic adventure theme.

SYNOPSIS

Presented by filmmaking legend Steven Spielberg, directed by Oscar© winner Robert Zemeckis, and starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, the phenomenally popular BACK TO THE FUTURE literally changed the future of the adventure movie genre. Now, this unprecedented BACK TO THE FUTURE DVD trilogy immerses you in all the breathtaking action, groundbreaking comedy and sheer movie-making magic of one of the most brilliantly inventive, wildly entertaining motion picture triumphs of Hollywood history.

BACK TO THE FUTURE: The year is 1985 – but not for long. Because teenager Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) is about to be blasted back to 1955 aboard the plutonium-powered DeLorean created by eccentric genius Doc Emmet Brown (Christopher Lloyd). But when Marty accidentally keeps his parents-to-be (Crispin Glover and Lea Thompson) from falling in love, it triggers a time-shattering chain reaction that could vaporize his future – and leave him trapped in the past! Now Marty’s last hope is to change history before the clock runs out on his only chance to get himself "Back to the Future."

BACK TO THE FUTURE II: Marty and Doc have barely recovered from their first time-traveling adventure when they launch themselves once more into the space-time continuum. But this time around, their attempt to fine tune the future in the year 2015 creates an outlandish, alternate Hill Valley where bully Biff Tannen is rich, powerful and …Marty’s dad! Now, their only chance to fix the present is by going back to 1955 all over again. But can Doc and Marty patch up the past without igniting a universe-shredding time paradox?

BACK TO THE FUTURE III: Fulfilling a long-time fantasy, Doc Brown has decided to live in the Old West of the 1880s. But when he’s in danger of meeting an untimely end, Marty travels back into the past to rescue him. There’s just one problem: Doc is so smitten by schoolteacher Clara Clayton (Mary Steenbergen) that he’s become a little…distracted. Now it’s up to Marty to keep Doc out of trouble, get the DeLorean running, and put the past, present and future on track so they can all get back to where and when they belong.

Tracing the course of the U.S. Civil War from the abolitionist movement, through the major battles, to the death of President Lincoln and the beginnings of Reconstruction, this highly acclaimed 11-hour mini-series captured the attention of viewers across the country during its initial broadcast in 1990.  Walter Goodman of The New York Times declared, "THE CIVIL WAR is so rich in conception and so rewarding in execution that it almost redeems the promise of the medium," while TV Guide raved, "THE CIVIL WAR is simply riveting."

The DVD edition of KEN BURNS’S THE CIVIL WAR broadens the viewing experience with the following special features:

"Bringing KEN BURNS’S THE CIVIL WAR to DVD is like breathing new life into a masterpiece," said Douglas Wadleigh, WHV Vice President, Special Interest Marketing.  "This newly remastered DVD version, with improved images, sound and outstanding special features, will enhance the viewing experience and make a new generation of consumers aware of this outstanding film."

"This remarkable documentary has been a consistently successful title since it first premiered on PBS," said Dan Hamby, Vice President, PBS Home Video. "The updated version takes advantage of new film-transfer, color-correction and audio mixing techniques - every frame has been digitized and the sound remixed in stereo. The look and sound are incredible." The remastering and rebroadcast of THE CIVIL WAR is part of a new PBS effort showcasing Ken Burns's documentaries.

In addition to the September rebroadcast of THE CIVIL WAR, PBS will premiere Ken Burns's American Stories, a weekly presentation of works from the acclaimed filmmaker's library, including extraordinary programs such as Huey Long, Frank Lloyd Wright, Brooklyn Bridge, Thomas Jefferson, Mark Twain, Jazz, Empire of the Air, Thomas Hart Benton, The Shakers and Statue of Liberty.  All of these titles are available from WHV on VHS.  Frank Lloyd Wright, Thomas Jefferson, Mark Twain, Jazz and Statue of Liberty are also available on DVD.   The Monday night Ken Burns's American Stories broadcasts will air beginning September 30 through the end of 2002.

SYNOPSIS

Hailed as a film masterpiece and landmark in historical storytelling, Ken Burns's epic documentary brings to life America's most destructive - and defining - conflict. The glories and horrors of this unforgettable event are recounted in the words of the participants themselves, through diary entries, letters, still photographs and illustrations of the time, with a soundtrack comprised of war-era tunes played on period instruments. With digitally enhanced images and new, 5.1 surround sound, KEN BURNS’S THE CIVIL WAR is the saga of celebrated generals and ordinary soldiers, a heroic and transcendent president and a country that had to divide itself in two in order to become one.

WARNER HOME VIDEO EXPANDS MUSIC DVD CATEGORY VIA NEW STRATEGIC ALLIANCE WITH EAGLE ROCK ENTERTAINMENT

Eagle Rock’s "Janet Jackson: Live in Hawaii" is first of top-flight concert videos to launch Warner Home Video into exploding new DVD segment

In a strategic move to develop, acquire and distribute music DVDs -- one of the fastest growing entertainment formats -- Warner Home Video (WHV) has announced a dynamic new partnership with the industry’s premiere programmer of live concert performances, Eagle Rock Entertainment (ERE).

The joint announcement was made here today by executives of both companies at a special press conference at the House of Blues. The alliance is the first of several strategic partnerships WHV has developed with music DVD content providers to help open up the great potential of the burgeoning music DVD category.

Live concert music DVDs are currently the second largest special interest DVD category after TV episodics. In addition to superior picture and Dolby 5.1 sound, music DVDs include all the bonus features now commonplace for movies released on DVD.

WHV plans an aggressive new rollout of top-talent releases that will utilize the same sales and marketing muscle that has made WHV the current total market share leader as well as the leader in three special interest categories: documentary, TV episodic and large format film.

The first title under the new WHV/ERE deal will be the September 3rd release of Janet Jackson: Live In Hawaii, the four-time Grammy winner’s spectacular Hawaiian HBO concert from her sold-out "All For You Tour."

"In partnering with WHV, a variety of recording artists can benefit from WHV sales, distribution and marketing expertise within the DVD format," said Doug Wadleigh, WHV vice president, special interests. "Eagle Rock Entertainment has proven to be the leading producer of live concerts from top recording artists around the world. Their titles, lead by Janet at her dazzling best, will give us a big jump in our plan to strategically enter this category."

Geoff Kempin, COO of Eagle Rock Entertainment's visual activities worldwide said, "As we continue to produce and acquire top flight music and special interest DVD programming, this partnership brings phenomenal marketing, sales and distribution depth and reach to selected titles in the U.S."

"We have some great titles in the pipeline," Jeff Baker, General Manager of Eagle Rock's DVD and Home Video in the U.S., said, "where the match of music repertoire and special interest will be an especially strong fit with Warner Home Video."

MGM HOME ENTERTAINMENT PRESENTS A FEAST FOR THE SENSES KOYAANISQATSI AND POWAQQATSI

Groundbreaking DVD’s Available September 17 Just Prior To The Theatrical Release of NAQOYQATSI The Third In The Trilogy

MGM Home Entertainment debuts Godfrey Reggio’s revolutionary films with the premiere of KOYAANISQATSI and POWAQQATSI on DVD on September 17. Hailed by critics as works of art, the films feature inspired cinematography by Ron Fricke and are set to the beautiful music of Golden Globe-winnings composer Philip Glass. KOYAANISQATSI and POWAQQATSI entice viewers to see life in a new way - all without the use of actors or dialog. Written and directed by Reggio, KOYAANISQATSI and POWAQQATSI are part of the apocalyptic "qatsi" trilogy soon to be complete with the release of the last film, Naqoyqatsi, in theatres on October 2, 2002.

The films’ titles are based on the ancient Hopi Indian language and reflect the movies’ themes. KOYAANISQATSI means "life out of balance" and contrasts the tranquil beauty of nature with the frenzied hum of contemporary society. POWAQQATSI stands for "life in transformation" and explores the efforts of developing nations and the effect the transition to modernization has had on them. KOYAANISQATSI and POWAQQATSI will be available as a discounted DVD 2-pack for $29.98 and individually for $19.98. Both titles include a new featurette about Reggio and Glass and the original theatrical trailers for all three films in the trilogy.

This fall, Steven Soderbergh and Miramax films are proud to present Naqoyqatsi (Life as

Battle), the long-awaited sequel to the groundbreaking films KOYAANISQATSI and POWAQQATSI Filmmaker Godfrey Reggio once again takes us on an emotional journey that highlights the profundities imbedded in our everyday lives. In this final installment of the "qatsi" trilogy, Reggio chronicles with breathtaking imagery the most significant event of the last five thousand years: the shift from a world organized by the principles of nature to one dominated by technology, the synthetic and the virtual.

KOYAANISQATSI

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, KOYAANISQATSI (Life out of Balance) is a cinematic masterpiece so extraordinary that it regales the senses, stimulates the mind and actually "redefines the potential of filmmaking" (The Holly wood Reporter). Celebrated director Godfrey Reggio, innovative cinematographer Ron Fricke and Golden Globe-winning composer Philip Glass have created a "spellbinding [film] so rich in beauty and detail that with each viewing it becomes a new and different film" (Leonard Maltin).

POWAQQATSI

Hailed by audiences and critics around the world as "mesmerizing" (The Detroit News), POWAQQATSI (Life in Transformation) is filled with "images of astonishing beauty" (Roger Ebert). Bold, haunting and epic in scale, this extraordinary film calls into question everything we think we know about contemporary society. By juxtaposing images of ancient cultures with those of modern life, POWAQQATSI masterfully portrays the human cost of progress. It is a film that engages the soul as well as the mind.

COLUMBIA TRISTAR HOME ENTERTAINMENT PREMIERES "MAGGIE AND THE FEROCIOUS BEAST" ON DVD AUGUST 6

Imaginative Stories from Top-Rated Nick Jr. Television Show Make `Maggie' a Hit with Preschoolers and Older Kids Stories Based on Best-Selling books by Mother-Son Creative Team

The most exciting new female character in preschool television debuts in two new titles on VHS and DVD August 6 with Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment's release of MAGGIE AND THE FEROCIOUS BEAST: Adventures in Nowhere Land and We Are Family. Produced by animation powerhouse Nelvana and currently airing as one of the top-rated programs on Nick Jr. television, MAGGIE AND THE FEROCIOUS BEAST encourages young viewers to engage in pretend play with Maggie and her imaginative friends while teaching life lessons about friendship, cooperation, responsibility and good manners.

Adventures in Nowhere Land and We Are Family, each with five captivating stories for a VHS suggested list price (SLP) of $12.95 each, are available in English and Spanish versions and are closed-captioned. The Adventures in Nowhere Land DVD also includes a bonus story and such special features as interactive menus and episode selections for an SLP of $19.95.

The bright, bold, animated MAGGIE AND THE FEROCIOUS BEAST is a "smart show" and recently received a Parent's Choice Gold Award. Betty and Michael Paraskevas, a mother-son creative team who also consult on the television series, base the program on their best-selling books. While the script and pacing appeal to preschoolers, older children enjoy the program as well. "We wanted this to be a show that a kid could grow into instead of growing out of," explains Michael Paraskevas, who illustrates Maggie. "School-aged kids tell us that they like to watch it with their younger brothers and sisters."

A precocious five-year-old, Maggie imagines Nowhere Land where she and her two favorite toys, Hamilton Hocks (a cautious pig with a love for music and singing) and the Ferocious Beast (a red polka-dotted creature who's anything but ferocious!), have one adventure after another while learning life lessons in a gentle, non-threatening way. These colorful and endearing characters present situations that are familiar to children ages two to six - or anyone who's ever hugged a favorite cuddly toy and engaged in imaginative play.

The social interaction between Maggie and her friends is realistic and balanced with loads of humor. Ferocious Beast and Hamilton Hocks sometimes disagree, but Maggie helps smooth the way, resolving any differences. Hamilton keeps all sorts of treasures in his beloved cardboard box, leading the threesome to all kinds of new and fun activities.

Smart dialogue, imaginative sequences, gentle pacing and charming characters - with a strong female lead - make MAGGIE AND THE FEROCIOUS BEAST unique among children's programming. It garnered a number-one Nielsen rating after just three weeks of broadcast when it launched in June 2000 and remains one of Nick Jr.'s top-five preschool shows. The popular web site, www.ferociousbeast.com, invites viewers to play along with fun games and activities featuring Maggie and her friends.
