GOD,
SEX & APPLE PIE ($25) is a lot like a slice of THE BIG CHILL,
or maybe a piece of THE RETURN OF THE SECAUCUS SEVEN. Still, GOD,
SEX & APPLE PIE is a somewhat amusing and modestly entertaining
little independent film, which picked up a few festival awards, but
ultimately, treads on rather familiar territory. GOD, SEX & APPLE
PIE tells the story of a group of four thirty-something year old male
friends, who get together, along with their wives and girlfriends, for an
annual getaway at a mountain cabin. Over the course of the weekend old
animosities bubble to the surface, relationship-damaging secrets are
revealed, and there is a bit of sex to relieve the tension. GOD, SEX
& APPLE PIE features a reasonably solid, and occasionally
attractive ensemble cast that includes Greg Wrangler, Penelope Crabtree,
Mark Porro, Katy Kurtzman, Jerome Courshon, Andrea Leithe, Steve Rifkin,
Maria McCann and Phil Palisoul.
Lightyear
Entertainment has made GOD, SEX & APPLE PIE available on DVD in
a 1.78:1 wide screen presentation that features the anamorphic enhancement
for 16:9 displays. The transfer is pretty darn good, but by the looks of
the film stock used to shoot GOD, SEX & APPLE PIE, there is no
denying that is a modestly budgeted independent movie. In general, the
image appears fairly crisp and nicely defined. Colors are pretty solid and
produced natural looking flesh tones. Film grain is occasionally
noticeable and there are infrequent blemishes on the element used for the
transfer. There is a Dolby Digital 5.1 channel soundtrack, which sounds
pleasant enough and comes to life whenever some incidental music pops up.
Dialogue is always completely understandable and crisp. Full motion video
and sound enhance the interactive menus, which provide access to the
standard scene selection and set up features, as well as some deleted
scenes, interviews with members of the production team, a brief look
behind the scene and a trailer.
GOD,
SEX & APPLE PIE is a reasonably entertaining independent that
looks and sounds good on DVD. If movies in the vein of THE BIG CHILL
and THE RETURN OF THE SECAUCUS SEVEN are your thing, you may want
