For an "NC-17" rated movie about the porn industry, ORGAZMO ($20) is pretty much goofy good-natured fun and fairly tame. Personally, I canít understand how ORGAZMO ever scored an "NC-17" rating; there is absolutely no penetration, no "money shots" and the only things resembling either male or female genitalia on display in this movie are made of rubber. Letís face it, Iíve seen "R" rated movies with more nudity than ORGAZMO, so I guess the new watermark for an "NC-17" rating is politically incorrect content and tasteless jokes. Coming down off my soapbox about the rating system, I have to say I liked ORGAZMO, and while the movie is certainly amusing, it isnít quite as funny as director Trey Parkerís SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER & UNCUT, which is a masterpiece of bad taste and politically incorrect content.
The plot of ORGAZMO finds Mormon Elder Joe Young going door to door in Hollywood trying to spread the word of his faith. As expected, Joe isnít finding too much success with the denizens of Tinseltown and eventually this idealistic young Mormon knocks on the wrong dooróthus interrupting the shooting of a porno movie entitled Orgazmo, which features a sexual superhero. After Joe successfully fends off "security personnel" of porn director Maxxx Orbison (Michael Dean Jacobs), the director ends up making the straight-laced Mormon an offer he canít refuse- namely a ton of cash to star in the film as masked superhero Orgazmo. Sure itís porn, but Joe will only perform in the filmís fighting sequences, while stunt "appendage" handles all the sex scenes. Seeing the movie as a solution to financial problems preventing him from marrying his fiancťe, Joe reluctantly dons the mask and tights of Orgazmo. The cast of ORGAZMO also features Matt Stone, Dian Bachar, Robyn Lynne, and Ron Jeremy.
Universal Studios Home Video has made ORGAZMO available on DVD in a 1.85:1 widescreen presentation that has been enhanced for playback on 16:9 displays. Presented in rated and unrated (aka "NC-17") ORGAZMO looks pretty darn good on DVD. The picture is usually sharp and produces good definition, although there are some occasional shots that come up a bit soft (bad pun intended). Colors appear fresh and the flesh tones are appealing. Blacks are accurate, whites are crisp and the picture produces smooth contrast. There are only minor blemishes on the film elements and grain is rather minimal. Digital compression artifacts are well contained.
The Dolby Digital 2.0 channel track decodes to standard surround with decent results. Sound effects are spread around, but arenít as precisely rendered, as they would have been in a discrete format. Dialogue is clean and always intelligible. Music has respectable fidelity and holds up reasonably well with a bit of amplification. No other language tracks are provided, but English, French and Spanish subtitles have been included.
Animation and sound serve to enhance the DVD's interactive menus. Through the menus, one has access to standard scene selection and set up features, as well as some interesting supplemental features. Three audio commentaries are provided on the DVD: The first (Drunken) commentary includes Trey writer/director/star Trey Parker, producer Jason McHugh, Dave Stotts, Stan Sawicki, Dian Bechar, Marcus Vaughn and Andy Kemler, and Matt Stone. The second (Cast) commentary includes Jason McHugh, DVD producer Mattt Potter, Farrell Timlake, David Dunn, Shayla Laveaux, Masao "Maki" San, Lloyd Kaufman, and Robyn Lynne Raab. The third (Wild) commentary includes Weird Al Yankovic, Kevin Smith, Dave Foley, Jerry Zucker, Pam Brady, Kyle McCulloch, and Matt Prager.
On side two of the DVD, one will find the remaining bulk of the supplemental materials. Nearly a half hourís worth of Deleted Scenes have been provided with optional commentary. The Book Of Orgazmo is a forty-minute program that looks at how the project came together (bad pun not intended). The Dragon Con Interview With Trey Parker runs thirty-three minutes and features some interesting Q&A with the writer/director/star. Over forty minutes worth of Outtakes also have been provided, for those who enjoy watching actors flub lines and other amusing bits. Behind-The-Scenes Footage includes 17 minutes of raw footage from on the set. Nearly eight minutes of EPK Interviews are also provided, as is a Stills Gallery. Finally, two Trailers for the film are provided, although one was obviously designed to entice financial backing for the project.
OK, ORGAZMO isnít a brilliant comedy of bad taste, but it is amusing. If you are a fan of SOUTH PARK creator Trey Parkerís work, then youíll want to check out ORGAZMO.
