I remember watching LOVE AMERICAN STYLE as a kid. The show was an anthology comedy program (a rare beast even today) that offered an hour of laughs, or at least mild amusement, without any type of investment in the characters. Two, three or four romantic sitcom comedy segments usually comprised the hour, plus the episodes were padded with blackout skits. Since it aired in the 10pm time slot, LOVE AMERICAN STYLE offered supposedly risqué content (after all, there was a sexual revolution during the 1960s), however the shows are really very tame- even by late 60s standards.

LOVE AMERICAN STYLE: SEASON 1, VOLUME 1 ($32) comes to DVD in a three disc set that features the first twelve episodes that were aired in the show’s freshman year. The thirty-seven individual segments that comprise the twelve featured episodes are as follows: Love And The Pill, Love And The Hustler, Love And A Couple Of Couples, Love And The Joker, Love And The Letter, Love And The Living Doll, Love And The Unlikely Couple, Love And The Phone Booth, Love And The Doorknob, Love And The Militant, Love And The Legal Agreement, Love And Who?, Love And The Single Couple, Love And The Phonies, Love And The Modern Wife, Love And The Busy Husband, Love And The Watchdog, Love And The Dating Computer, Love And Take Me Along, Love And The Geisha, Love And The Advice Givers, Love And The Roommate, Love And The Burglar, Love And The Wild Party, Love And The Big Leap, Love And The Former Marriage, Love And The Good Deal, Love And The Shower, Love And Mother, Love And The Athlete, Love And The Dummies, Love And The Comedy Team, Love And The Mountain Cabin, Love And The Divorce Sale, Love And The Bachelor, Love And The Positive Man and Love And The Other Love.

Actors making appearances in LOVE AMERICAN STYLE: SEASON 1, VOLUME 1 include Eddie 'Rochester' Anderson, Yvonne Craig, Robert Cummings, Kene Holliday, Mantan Moreland, Flip Wilson, Jane Wyatt, Robert Clary, Alice Ghostley, Lou Jacobi, Arte Johnson, Margaret O'Brien, E.J. CBS/Paramount Home Entertainment has made all of the episodes that comprise LOVE AMERICAN STYLE: SEASON 1, VOLUME 1 available on DVD in the 4:3 full screen aspect ratios of their original television broadcasts. For their age, the episodes look pretty darn good. Sharpness and image detail are more than respectable. There is a little bit of softness here and there, but it is nothing that out of sorts for a show of this vintage. Colors have the decided look of late sixties early seventies television film stocks and tend to be on muted side. Black and whites appear just fine. Contrast is as good as flat sitcom lighting allow. The film elements are well preserved with few signs of age being present. Although not excessive, film grain is a constant. Digital compression artifacts are well contained.

All of the episodes contained in LOVE AMERICAN STYLE: SEASON 1, VOLUME 1 feature Dolby Digital monaural soundtracks. For episodes produced in 1969, the audio quality is just fine. The majority of background hiss and other audible defects have been cleaned up in the mastering process, leaving the tracks with stable sonics. Fidelity is fine, although the sound effects and laugh track do sound canned, also the music can be a tad thin. Dialogue is crisply rendered and remains totally understandable. No other language tracks or subtitle options have been included on the DVD. The basic interactive menus allow one access to the standard episode selection and set up features. No supplemental content has been provided.

Sure it’s dated, but LOVE AMERICAN STYLE is vintage television fun. The DVDs offer solid presentations, which will please those feeling nostalgic about the series.
