OPERATION: DVD

Where the heck are all the classic RKO titles?

DVD has been around for a couple of years now, and there are thousands and thousands new movies available on the format. Unfortunately, classic films continue to take a back seat to all the movies just coming off of theatrical release. There is no studio where the absence of classic films is more obvious than those from RKO. Sure, RKO Radio Pictures ceased being a movie studio decades ago, but the library of RKO movies has remained in circulation because Ted Turner owned and marketed these classic movie on cable television, VHS tape and Laserdisc. Now that Turner’s assets are part of Time Warner, the RKO library is in the hands of Warner Home Video, a company that has released less than a handful of the RKO classics. Below is a short list of RKO classics that should be immediately released on DVD. This list is by no means representative of all the great RKO films that should be released on DVD, it is offered here only as a starting point.
