ISSUE 15 OBJECTIVE:
Dear Operation Laserdisc:
I have recently been in contact with Warner Home Video regarding a Todd-AO Laserdisc release of AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS. As I understand it, unless restoration is started immediately, the Todd-AO negative will be lost. I was told that, because restoration of a Todd-AO print would cost millions, the decision to restore lies with the very top brass of Time Warner. Gerald Levin, CEO of Time Warner Inc., was mentioned as the best person to contact. However, I have not been able to find an e-mail address or fax number for him.
It was also mentioned that the negative of A STAR IS BORN (1954) is in desperate need of restoration. Apparently the president of Warner Home Video would love to release both films in letterbox form, but will not transfer substandard film elements.
This looks like a job for OPERATION: LASERDISC. If all Laserdisc collectors who want to save these two classics from extinction can find the proper address to contact Mr. Levin (or, perhaps even better, Ted Turner) and convey the need for immediate action, I'm sure we'll get a positive result.
One more thing: I was advised that all correspondence regarding this matter not be confined to Laserdisc releases of these films, but should reflect a more general concern that these two genuine classics (one of them a Best Picture Oscar winner) should not be lost for future generations. Thank you for your time.
